Oxfordshire has a two-tier system of local government. This means that
your council services are provided by two different councils one
county council (Oxfordshire County Council) and five district councils
(Oxford City Council, Cherwell District Council, South Oxfordshire District
Council, Vale of White Horse District Council and West Oxfordshire District
Council).
Oxfordshire County Council has 74 elected councillors representing all
parts of the county. The council is Conservative-controlled and its decision-making
body is called the cabinet.
It takes responsibility for many key local services and employs more than
20,000 people to deliver them. Each year, the council manages £845m
of public money in the provision of these services on behalf of Oxfordshire's
615,000 residents.
Oxford City Council provides a wide range of services for approximately
149,000 residents, 108,000 people who work in Oxford, and 8.5 million
people who visit the city every year. The Liberal Democrat party runs
the administration.
There are 50 councillors at Cherwell District Council, majority there
and in South Oxfordshire, which has 48 councillors.
Vale of White Horse District Council has 51 seats and is Liberal Democrat-led,
and West Oxfordshire District Council is made up of 49 seats, and is run
by the Conservatives.
