Dapper, ambitious and sinful

They are dapper, intelligent, quintessentially English, and slightly surreal.

They also have a name that sounds less like a band, and more like the start of an epic confession.

They are Envy & Other Sins, and they are rewriting the rules of rock 'n' roll.

Favouring tweed and velvet over denim and leather, they take their musical inspiration from Roxy Music and The Kinks, their name from Milton, and their visual guideposts from Art Nouveau, Charlie Chaplin and the Victorians.

On Friday, they play the Carling Academy, fresh from the release of debut album We Leave At Dawn.

"We want to have that feeling of faded glamour," says bass player Mark Lees, explaining the band's appearance.

The band won Channel 4's talent-search program Mobile Act Unsigned - beating competition from 1,600 other bands, and picking up a contract with A&M Records.

And they are confident they are going to make their mark. As keyboardist Jarvey Moss says: "Were never going to be a little niche band. The future is Sinful!"

Doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets are £6 in advance.
