TENNIS: Newcomers Wychwood give City fright

Wychwood came so close to producing a huge shock in their first season in Ladies' Division 1 of the OLTA Wilson Inter-Club 3-Pair League.

Facing defending champions Oxford City, Wychwood trailed 3-2 going into the final round of matches.

They levelled after winning the battle of the No 3 pairs, and then saw both the other rubbers go to three sets.

But needing just one win to secure a draw at least, they suffered a double defeat.

The deciding match proved crucial, with Jess Stacey and Liz Jones holding their nerve to beat Rachel Henderson and Lucy Artus 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to give City the narrowest of wins.

Oxford Sports made it two victories from two with a 6-2 win over Goring.

And it was two rising stars that came to the fore.

Ciara Kelly and Milli Milsom won all three rubbers at first pair as Sports eased home.

With No 2 pair Cressida Henderson and Karey Coltart winning two-and-a-half rubbers, the result was never in doubt.

Banbury West End were brought down to earth with a 7-1 thrashing at Cholsey.

Cholsey won their opening match by the same score. Ces Wheeler and Ruth Ballantyne dropped just three games to record a hat-trick of wins for the club.

In the 2-Pair League, Chris Horgan and Steve Roberts won a thrilling final rubber to give Oxford Sports a 3-1 win over Cholsey in Men's Division 1.

Leading 2-1, Horgan and Roberts beat Pat Clayphan and Matt Ross 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 for the crucial point to guide their side to victory.

Norham Gardens whitewashed Wantage 4-0.

Peter Mann, Ben Davis, Neil Simons and Symon Porteous were the victorious team.
