TENNIS: Gujral and Corfield hold nerve

Woodstock A produced a gritty final-round display to beat Oxford City A 5-3 in Mixed Division 1 of the 3-Pair League.

Leading 3.5-2.5 going into the last matches, they were forced to hold their nerve to clinch a narrow victory.

Although Mike Miller and Ester Symmons beat Manoj Gujral and Nicola Casey to make it 3.5-3.5, victory for Paul Casey and June Lancefield over Duncan Todd and Delia Ehaddwici edged Woodstock in front.

And then it was left to a tense final rubber to seal victory.

Pramod Gujral and Jenny Corfield lost the first set to Rutvica Andkijdsevic and Roberto Sanchez 6-1, but they hit back to claim the second set 7-5 and then took the third and deciding one 6-2.

North Oxford A showed their North Oxford B teammates no mercy, romping to a 9-0 whitewash.

North's second string never threatened to cause an upset, with the sextet of Louise Purton and Jay Sexton, Kate Calnan and Paul Wood as well as Emma Tolson and Tom Dance proving too strong.

In the 2-Pair League, Abingdon and Bicester's mixed teams enjoyed 3.5-.5 wins over Cholsey and Wantage B respectively.

Julia Collinson and Chris Coles were unbeaten for Abingdon, while Rob Pink and Becky Garrett won both rubbers for Bicester.

Banbury West End drew 2-2 with Oxford Sports A.

Both final rubbers went to a third set, with Sports' Tony Habgood and Gillian Pearson completing a fine 0-6, 6-1, 6-0 comeback 3-PAIR LEAGUE.
