SPEEDWAY: Depleted Cheetahs struggle

Oxford Cheetahs took a further step towards the Conference League play-offs, despite a 59-36 defeat at Buxton yesterday.

Cheetahs were again severely depleted, with Jordan Frampton and Sam Martin in Premier League action and four riders out injured.

However, they still comfortably took what could be a vital aggregate bonus point, thanks to the efforts of Lee Smethills (18), Kyle Hughes (a career best 13 paid 14) and Scott Campos (5 paid 6).

It proved to be a difficult afternoon for youngster Brendan Johnson, who gave his all, but suffered three falls.

Cheetahs are hoping that both Andrew Bargh and Danny Betson will return from injury for this Friday's top-of-the-table clash against Scunthorpe Scorpions.

Buxton: Armstong 11, Hodgson 4+2, James 15+1, Taylor 14+3, Roberts R/R, Dallaway 10+1, Starke 5+2. 59pts.

Oxford: Smethills 18, Newitt 0, Bargh R/R, Andrews 0, Hughes 13+1, Campos 5+1, Johnson 0. 36pts.
