SPEEDWAY: End of an era
SADLY, this will be the last time I write about Oxford speedway.
After 27 years of covering Oxford Cheetahs, I have decided to bring the curtain down on my reporting career.
It's been a long journey, but the 80s must be the highlight.
It was the days of Hans Nielsen and Simon Wigg heading a team that was probably the finest the fans ever witnessed.
1985, 86 and 89 was the time Cheetahs won nearly everything put in front of them.
There were two civic receptions, parades on open top buses and league titles, trophies galore plus World Championship and Longtrack titles added for good measure.
A wonderful time, probably never to be repeated.
Then once Northern Sports gave up promoting the sport, it all started to go downhill - except for a brief spell where Steve Purchase led the team to glory in 2001.
Many since have tried and failed to get Oxford back on the map, and this season's episode of Colin Horton pulling out in May was the last straw .
Has it been worth it?
Yes, admittedly, I have seen more lows than highs, but wouldn't have missed it for the world.
Finally, thanks to the people who have helped me out over the years including Rob Peasley and Leon Hill.
I just hope that everything goes well for new promoter Allen Trump, a man who deserves success if only for getting Cheetahs back.
