SCHOOLS' FOOTBALL: Vale are record-breakers

Vale of White Horse returned from the ESFA Under 14 Isle of Wight Festival with a 100 per cent record - for the fourth consecutive year.

No other association in the country has achieved that long unbeaten run.

The achievement was even more remarkable as two of the squad were making their Vale debuts after being drafted in at short notice following late withdrawals.

Luke Edwards and Ryan Tappin both did well, with Tappin excelling as the midfield ball-winner.

They started the tournament with an emphatic 4-1 win against Mid-Somerset .

Ben Whitehead and Oliver Taylor gave Vale a two-goal half-time lead, and they both scored again in the the second half.

Vale then beat Hyndburn & Ribble Valley (Lancashire) 3-1.

A free-kick from Frankie Merola was deflected into his own net by a Hyndburn defender to give Vale the lead, and Taylor doubled their lead before half-time.

Whitehead put the result beyond doubt before a poor clearance allowed Hyndburn to get onto the scoresheet.

On day three, Vale saw off previously undefeated Yeovil 1-0, although their strong and physical approach meant that Vale created few chances.

An inswinging corner after 20 minutes caused panic in the Yeovil defence and Merola got the faintest of touches to the ball, which just crossed the line for the only goal of the game.

A tremendous defensive display in the second half saw Vale home, with Merola, Jack Shipway, Jonny Naish and Jack Bernasconi winning numeous tackles, and keeper Leigh Bedwell handling superbly.

Vale wrapped up a fantastic week on the Thursday when they defeated Derby 4-1.

Whitehead gave them the lead before Bedwell was harshly-adjudged to have brought down a Derby forward.

But justice was done when the resulting penalty cleared the bar.

After the break, Merola headed home a free kick and Ashley Towse added a third.

Although, Shipway sliced a clearance into his own net, Whitehead bagged a fourth.
