RUGBY UNION: Walters wants county support

Jerry Walters is calling for Oxfordshire's rugby public to turn out in force as Wallingford play the biggest game in their history.

Wallingford's chairman is determined they have as big a crowd as possible for Saturday's play-off clash Wootton Bassett at the Hithercroft (3pm).

Victory would see them reach their highest ever league status - South West 2 East and face an intriguing local derby with newly-relegated Reading.

Walters said: "We definitely don't want to be out-shouted by Wootton Bassett.

"What we would love to see down there on Saturday is some other rugby people from around the county like Jason Bowers (Chinnor coach and Oxon's rugby development officer).

"This is the only match going on where something is at stake.

"It is the biggest game in the club's history and we want a large crowd to see it.

"To get anywhere near South West 2 was inconceivable four or five years ago.

"For a small town like Wallingford to have a club in this position is brilliant.

"The commitment of the players is the most significant thing.

"They are training religiously Tuesday and Thursday."

Wallingford finished level with Olney at the top of Southern Counties North on 37 points, but lost out due to an inferior points difference.

Wiltshire's Wootton Bassett were runners-up in the parallel Southern Counties South league with 36 points, so Wallingford's superior total earned them home advantage.

Walters added: "The last defeat we had at home was to Newbury Stags in November 2005.

"We certainly don't want to lose that record on Saturday."
