RUGBY UNION: Scene set for big finish

When the South West 1 fixtures were published last summer, April 19 always looked a tasty end to the campaign for Oxfordshire rugby.

And that has certainly proved the case with Chinnor needing to draw with or beat rivals Oxford Harlequins at Kingsey Road to win the title and secure promotion.

Barring two freak results*, Quins will not be relegated, but they will surely not want to roll over, particularly having beaten Chinnor twice already this season.

Chinnor were suprisingly flat in each of those clashes, which should make them even more fired up this time around.

What is guaranteed is that Saturday will be a massive occasion, which no fan should miss.

Chinnor are already advertising their DVD review of the season, which will feature highlights of Saturday's match.

Now it is up to their players to ensure there will be a real party to film.

Wallingford could also win the Southern Counties North title, but must achieve a better result than leaders Olney.

The south Oxfordshire club host Milton Keynes, while Olney are at home to Beaconsfield.

Whatever happens, a Wallingford victory could at least secure them a home play-off against Southern Counties South runners-up Wootton Bassett.

The team with the better record over the season will host the clash with a place in South West 2 East on offer.

Wootton Bassett are also on 35 points, but have a better points difference.

They are, however, hosting champions Trowbridge, who won't want to lose their final game.

*Quins must lose 80-0 and Coney Hill beat Maidenhead by the same score.

  • In next week's Scrum Down, I will reveal my team of the season.

I am sticking with the policy of judging players against the level they play at, so everyone has a chance to make it.

Does 1 appearance as Captain against Tourists qualify as an entrant ?

I saw an oldie a few weeks taking to the field at a very low level and making plenty of impact.

Surely the openside place is a foregone conclusion Mr Mazzetti!!

A terrapin is normally a domestic pet which spends most of its time on land; a turtle is a sea dwelling creature that only come ashore to lay eggs you uncouth reptile!! Get it right!!
Anybody who knows rugby would say that the Green army have the most complete openside in the county! Quins have missed a trick!

Dressing in Tweeds makes neither of us less reptilian.
Whats this got to do with Rugby ?
