BOWLS: City fall at first hurdle

Oxford City & County, last year's runner-up in the Oxford & District League Cup, sponsored by S&J Timms Cleaning Services and Rub-A-Dub-Dub laundrette, suffered a shock exit against Chipping Norton.

The west Oxfordshire club came out on top in a preliminary round clash, but were then then crashed out 96-60 against champions Banbury Central A in the first round.

League newcomers Watlington suffered a narrow defeat against Bicester in the preliminary round.

Wins for Keith Lane and Mick Saunders weren't quite enough to help Watlington progress as they lost by three shots to an experienced Bicester side.

Headington A were the biggest first-round winners with a 102 -46 victory over South Oxford, while their B side also notched up a good debut win against Witney Town.

Russell Edwards and Terry Murphy both scored well for Headington B.

The competition has attracted a record 23 entries this year.

1st round results: West Witney 46, Carterton 83; Woodstock 67, Kidlington 80; Cotswold 73, Bicester 63; South Oxford 46, Headington 102; Oxford City & County B 84, Witney Mills 50; Headington B 74, Witmey Town 63; Shiplake 67, Hanborough 53; Banbury Central A 96, Chipping Norton 60.
