BOXING: Town no match for Gown

OXFORD University shaped up for next month's 100th Varsity Match with a 10-5 victory in the annual Town versus Gown clash.

The standard displayed by the students in the ring has gradually improved in recent years with the quality shown by this season's potential Blues the best since the turn of the Millennium.

And with places still to be decided for the match with Cambridge at London's York Hall on March 8, there was an added incentive to deliver at the Oxford Union.

Canadian post-graduate Kate Stinson, this season's women's captain, led by example in the night's opening clash against Hanwell rival Kim Connolly.

She demonstrated more variety in her punching and was always more nimbler within the roped square than her opponent to claim a totally deserved unanimous decision.

Middleweight Ben Quigley is set to gain his second boxing Blue after demolishing All Stars rival Levi Gulliman inside two rounds.

A four-hook combination prompted referee Jack Wilson to administer the first standing count as the opening session drew to a close.

Quigley then consolidated his advantage after the interval by imposing two further tolls, both prompted by trapping Gulliman against the ropes with clusters of hooks and uppercuts, before the bout was halted 79 seconds into the second period.

Berinsfield featherweight Roxroy Eccleson posted the first Town success, setting the pace in the early stages to edge a split decision over fellow debutant Dan Hudson.

London southpaw Tom Jacques levelled the match by making full use of his extra inches to outpoint Jason Cuddy on a majority verdict.

The students than found their account in deficit when Phil Brown claimed the second success of the night for a Berinsfield debutant.

He landed the crisper punches to claim a split verdict over John McCarthy, a mathematician who was also having his ring baptism in their lightweight clash.

But three-times British University champion James Whitman again levelled.

He imposed a standing count in the fourth round to consolidate his authority over fellow open class opponent Lloyd Smith - the 15th win for the southpaw.

Fred Brown, who is also attached to the Berinsfield gym, chalked up the tenth win of his ring career by outboxing Bulmershe rival Matt Howe to claim all three votes from the judges in this light welterweight clash.

The students then found themselves on a roll as Matt Nice got the better of Hanwell's Olly Luke on a split decision in a bruising welterweight encounter.

Stuart Garman enjoyed a dream start to his ring career in the same division by halting Portsmouth University's Luke Jeffrey midway through the second round.

Welterweight Tom Hughes used his extra height and reach to full effect to gain a clear points win over Bulmershe rival Adam Hood.

Liam Hart claimed the final non-academic win of the night, imposing a standing count in the closing stages to get the verdict over middleweight Steve Nunn.

Men's captain Carl Walton had the edge on accuracy to have his arm raised in triumph following his middleweight clash with Tamworth's Paul Fellows.

OUABC president Dom McKean used his extra inches and showed better ringcraft to get the decision over Paul Withers from the same Staffordshire gym in another 12st encounter.

James Robertson also made a winning start to his ring career with a split decision following his lightweight baptism against Cinderford's Gwyn Thomas.

As the clock edged past midnight, light heavyweight Mustafa Solomon failed to use his extra height and reach against shorter Portsmouth rival Danny Hendy.
