ICE HOCKEY: Rampant Stars silence Tigers
 |
| CLOSE ENCOUNTER: Vectis Tigers' Paul Sanderson (left) clashes with Oxford City Stars' Dean Francis. Sanderson was ejected from the game, while Francis was left sidelined through injury |
Oxford City Stars stormed to a 14-0 win over an ill-disciplined Vectis Tigers in South Division A on the Isle of Wight.
Oxford took a strong three line team with all their big gun forwards and Joe Edwards who was called up from the Under 18's squad to play senior hockey this week.
Alan Green, Jacob Smith and Joe Edwards hit hat-tricks, while netminder James Skaife recorded the third shut-out of his career.
Tigers were on the back foot from the start as referee Francois Belanger wouldn't allow their netminder to go on the ice as he wasn't on the game sheet.
It left Vectis to start the match with six outfield players and no netminder, while Kevin Tanner, who was already on the game sheet, pulled on the netminder's kit.
Sportingly, Stars decided not to shoot until Tanner got on the ice.
After he arrived, Sam Broughton scored Oxford's first, assisted by Green.
Four minutes later, Stars doubled their lead when Mark Krater smashed home a great pass from Smith.
Broughton then set up Green for No 3, before Tigers were handed a ten-minute misconduct penalty.
The Isle of Wight continued to dish out the strongarm tactics, and Richard Nembhard was sent off for boarding Will Skaife head first.
Skaife was taken off the ice with suspected concussion, and played no further part in the match.
Within a minute, Tigers captain Tony Blaize was handed a two-minute penalty for slashing.
Oxford kept their focus and Edwards made the powerplay count by notching his first senior goal.
Six minutes into the second period, Blaize was sent off for attacking Joe Oliver.
Smith then scored his first and Oxford added two powerplay goals through Green and Patrick Knightley, with Jamie Lee serving a 14-minute penalty for roughing.
Krater added to Stars' tally and Smith struck again to make it 9-0.
Green and Smith completed their hat-tricks in the third period, before Tigers' Paul Sanderson saw red following a referee penalty call on Ricky Attrill, who received two minutes for a cross check.
Sanderson was then sent off for abuse to the referee.
Oxford captain Darren Elliott made it 12-0, and Edwards scored twice to complete his first senior hat-trick.
