HOCKEY: Buckingham on song for Hawks

Oxford Hawks built on their good performance last week to win 4-3 at Richmond in South League Premier Division 1.

They struck from their first attack when Nick Ferraby scored from a short corner, but Richmond equalised before half-time.

The second half was open and exciting with the lead constantly changing.

Richmond went ahead yet Hawks came back with a superb move that covered the length of the pitch and ended with a strong run from Ferraby and a superb cross for Ali McShane to slot past the keeper.

Hawks went 3-2 up when McShane passed to Simon Buckingham to calmly round the keeper and score.

The home side equalised after a spell of pressure, but Buckingham's fine finish, for his second goal, from McShane's pass, brought Hawks three points.

Rover Oxford are now without a win in ten matches after falling to a 6-2 defeat at in-form West Hampstead in Premier Division 2.

Hampstead took the lead, but Rich Beer finished off a superb counter attack to level. Dan Smyth had earlier hit the post.

In the second half West Hampstead opened up a three-goal advantage.

Right back Duncan Buckmaster reduced the deficit, but two further goals from West Hampstead confirmed their victory.

Rover now play bottom side City of Portsmouth and third bottom BBHC in the next fortnight, and these games will decide their league status.

Banbury got back to winning ways in Premier Division 2 with a 4-0 victory over City of Portsmouth.

Dave Clark scored from the penalty spot after Richard Foreman's shot had been kicked off the line.

The second goal came when Craig Irvine fed Adrian Simons and he calmly rounded the keeper and flicked the ball into the net.

Simon Boardman got onto the scoresheet when his deflection went in, and this was quickly followed by a Tyson Nunneley goal from a short corner.

With five players missing, City of Oxford were expecting to get hammered away to leaders Tring in MBB&O Division 1, but in the end went down only 3-2.

They took the lead through a breakaway goal from Dave Layne, who normally plays for the 3rds.

In the second half, Tring dominated and scored three scrambled goals just through sheer pressure.

Seb Wilson, 17, then netted from a short corner to give City - who also fielded 16-year-old Jack Burke - a respectable result.

After their remarkable second-half recovery last week, Abingdon slipped to a 3-1 defeat away to OMT.

They got off to a good start, taking the lead after ten minutes through Josh Tomlinson, who netted a rebound from close range after his first effort was saved.

OMT were soon level after Abingdon's defence got caught in possession. The home side took the lead at a penalty corner, and increased it from a penalty stroke.

Witney lost 4-2 at Gerrards Cross, while Bicester lost 2-1 at Wokingham.

Other scorers: Hawks 2nd 4 (G Parker 2, B Monteiro, C Bennett), Lewes 2nd 0; City 2nd 3 (A Dayus, S Bell, C Brown), M Keynes 2nd 2; Hawks 3rd 3, Wokingham 3rd 2; Sonning 3rd 3, City 3rd 1 (S Addison); Hawks 4th 6 (H Lamb 2, M Shirley 2, D Gautrey, C Atkinson), Bicester 3rd 2; Hawks Fledglings 2 (T Silman, T Biggs), Rover Oxford 4th 1; Hawks Falcons 4 (I Sobey, T Henman, M Crampton-Smith, R Smart), Winchester Vets 1.
