GOLF: Chippy exact revenge

Chipping Norton gained revenge on Tadmarton Heath with a 2-1 home victory in Section 1 of the Shaw Gibbs Oxfordshire Foursomes League.

Tadmarton whitewashed Chippy in the equivalent clash last year, but needed a stirring comeback from Spencer Hallam and Andrew Mason to avoid a 3-0 defeat this time.

Chippy's Danny Hicks and Shaun Kench were one up with two to play, but lost the 17th hole and parred the last.

Hallam, who is now back to full fitness after suffering pneumonia and deep-vein thrombosis last year, rolled in a tricky five-foot birdie putt to snatch victory.

Chippy's victories saw Andy Johnson and Tim Reynolds beat Ian Mannning and Guy Sambrook 5 & 4, with Matt Johnson and Neil Thornton defeating Owen King and Mark Hughes 3 & 2.

Burford consigned Studley Wood to their fourth loss in four games.

Dave Summers and Simon Bulman, plus John Lally and Andy Purdy picked up Burford's victories in a 2-1 success, with Steve Jenkins and Joe Fathers grabbing Studley's point.

North Oxford looked set for maximum points against Oxford City in Section 2.

But an excellent approach to the 18th green by Andy Hooker was converted by Mark Hall for birdie to salvage a half for City.

North Oxford's wins came from Mike Tippett and Paul Jones plus Shaun Smith and Steve Smith, but City still top the table.

Leading amateur Eddie Pepperell turned out for Drayton Park, winning his match with Martin Roberts.

But he could not prevent them losing 2-1 at Brailes.
