GOLF: Friends had to battle hard
 |
| Runner-up Tilly Holder |
The Oxfordshire ladies' championship saw Sam Round defeat close friend and county foursomes partner Tilly Holder 3 & 2 in the final.
But both players came close to semi-final exits in a keenly-contested tournament at The Oxfordshire.
The top 16 players from a 36-hole medal qualifier competed in the first round where defending champion Katherine O'Connor was knocked out by fellow Tadmarton Heath member Sarah Amos.
Another making an early exit was the much-fancied Frilford Heath champion Jane Binning, who lost to Bicester's Laura Watkins.
Round eased past Lydia Fox (Studley Wood) and Caroline Johnson (Chipping Norton), but had to recover from three down after nine holes before beating Studley's Lauren Jupp 2 & 1 in the last four.
Holder edged out Gemma Clements (Studley), Frilford's Annie Gowing and Watkins, who trailed by five after ten holes, by one hole apiece to reach the final.
Both finalists produced some excellent golf, but the defining moment came on the par-three 13th hole when Round sank a 24-birdie putt to go two up.
Henley's Karen Pollard gave a dazzling display to defeat clubmate Jocelyn Longworth 7 & 6 to win the Davies Trophy for players' who qulaified 17th to 32nd.
Studley Wood's Lorna Wiltshire beat clubmate Lynda Lindsell 2 & 1 to win the county Bronze Championship, also played at The Oxfordshire.
Wiltshire knocked out Pat Lewis (Frilford) in the quarter-finals and Claire Macintosh (Studley) in the semis, both by 3 & 2.
Lindsell defeated Jane Hackett (Tadmarton) 3 & 1 in the last eight and Henley's Harriet Wyn-Jones at the first extra hole in the semi-finals.
