ATHLETICS: City's youngsters struggle in opener

Oxford City finished a distant last in their opening match in Southern Division 1 West of the National Young Athletes League at Basingstoke.

An under-strength City could not compete in all events and they lost valuable points.

However, there were some notable performances, with Emily Moore and Andrew Busby setting personal bests in the long jump.

Moore leapt 5.01m in the under 15 girls' event, while Busby recorded exactly 5.00m in the boys' competition.

Moore also led the way for the under 15 girls' with a personal best of 13.3 secs to win the 100m, and the team picked up useful points with victory in the 4x100m relay, clocking 54.0.

In the under 17 women's age group, Kirsty Warland got the day off to a good start with a personal best of 47.7 to win the 300m hurdles, following this up with a win in the 80m hurdles (11.9).

A field success came in the shot, where Nionah Ntaranga threw 7.54m in the A string shot.

They finished the day with a relay win in the 4x100m race, clocking 51.8.

The only success for the under 13 girls went to Maike Chapel, who won the high jump with 1.25m.

With many of the under 13 girls and boys competing for the first time, wins were difficult to come by.

The only success for the girls went to Maike Chapel, who won the high jump with 1.25m.

Henry Holmes posted the only boys' A string victory, clocking 26.6secs in the 200m, although Josh Tack won the B string race in 31.1.

Result: 1 Team Dorset 373pts, 2 Aldershot 355, 3 Isle of Wight 348, 4 Oxford City 216.
