ATHLETICS: Super Anderson smashes record
Melissa Hawtin won the 3,000m as an under 17 athlete
Melissa Hawtin won the 3,000m as an under 17 athlete

Danielle Anderson made a storming start to the Southern League season as she smashed a 28-year-old club record in Oxford City's first match in Southern League Division 1 at Portsmouth's Mountbatten Centre.

Anderson's record came in the senior/under 17 women's javelin, where she threw a massive 41.01m to win the event at a canter.

It capped an excellent day for City, who won promotion to Division 1 last season.

Melissa Hawtin, competing as an under 17 for the first time, took a comfortable victory in the 3,000m, clocking 10.16.0 - just nine seconds outside the club record.

Elsewhere, the 300m hurdles saw Kirsty Warland win with a personal best of 48.3secs, and she followed this up with a win in the 80m hurdles, clocking 11.9.

Emma Sutton won the A string shot with 9.06m, and followed this up with a personal best of 36.71m for victory in the hammer.

The club's junior section came to the fore, amassing 17 victories from a possible 21.

Emily Carstairs posted a sprint double, winning the A string 100 and 200m in times of 13.5 secs and 28.7 secs respectively.

She added further valuable points by finishing second in the high jump with a personal best of 1.40m.

Ellie Clarke-Jacques clocked 2.28.2 to win the 800m, while Lauren Hawtin won the 1500m in 5.17.2.

In the throwing events, Jess Anstice threw a personal best of 17.76m to win the discus and she also won the javelin with 9.73m.

Amy Cooper won the shot with 6.56m, while the quartet of Rebecca Byren, Carstairs, Cooper and Hawtin combined to win the 4x100m relay to round off a good day for the under 15 girls' team.

Result: 1 Oxford City 156pts, 2 Havant 153, 3 Hastings 127, 4 Loughton 118.
