ATHLETICS: City veterans have field day
Oxford City's veterans had a superb day in the British Masters Cross Country Championships, held at Bloxham's Warriner School on Saturday.
With more than 400 athletes from all over the country competing in age groups from over 35 to over 60, City took medals in three age groups, with the vet 60s leading the way with silver.
The 8.6km course was set by City's Dave Wheeler.
Roy Treadwell, on the anchor leg, clocked the fastest time in the vet 60 category, crossing the line in 35mins 43secs, with John Exley clocking 37.30 and Alan Matthews 36.42.
They were only eight seconds behind winners Hardley Runners.
Not to be outdone by their older colleagues, City's vet 40 and vet 50 teams both claimed bronze medals.
Steve Male was in superb form in the vet 40 race, clocking 30.15 to set the ball rolling.
Julian Richardson was next, recording 33.06, while John Lisiewicz anchored City home to bronze in 33.44.
In the vet 50 category, City again finished in third place.
Led off by Trevor Dixon (33.03), subsequent legs of 34.09 from Richard Grant and 35.29 from Dave Hartwell secured City's bronze.
