ATHLETIC: On-song Marley secures silver

Alchester's Nigel Marley led home the Oxfordshire contingent at the Banbury 15-mile road race, the first event of the 2008 Oxon Grand Prix Series, on Sunday.

Although Marley had to give best to Northbrook's Paul Andrew, he was satisfied with second, as he crossed the line in 1hr 25mins 6secs.

Witney's Tony Lock was fourth in 1.29.33, which gave him second place in the vet 40 men's category, while Banbury Harrier Tim Wright was fifth overall and third in the senior men's race, clocking 1.29.53.

Oxford City's Julian Richardson came home third in the vet 40 section, crossing the line in 1.31.01.

It was a good turn-out at Banbury, with more than 300 runners taking part.

The battle between Gerry Smith (Headington) and Jon Burgess (Alchester) in the vet 50 men's race was won by Burgess in 1.35.56, while Smith clocked 1.38.17.

And Woodstock's wily supervet Mike Shipway, now 65, crossed the line in 1.43.26 to take second place in the vet 60 race.

A marvellous run by Kidlington's Sophie Dawson gave her victory in the women's race in 1.38.02, while Witney's Nicola Gomm clocked 1.38.02 to take the vet 45 crown.

The team competitions were won by Cherwell's men and Banbury Harriers' women.
