CHINNOR battled well at a sun-soaked Silver Leys, but were unable to prevent Bishop’s Stortford from securing a bonus-point victory.
Ten tries were scored on a scorching Easter weekend, with the home side triumphing 39-26 in National League 1.
The visitors lost top try-scorer Kieran Goss to a back injury early on and trailed 8-0 after 14 minutes following a Tom Walker penalty and a Josh Stannard try.
Chinnor No 8 Fred Tuilagi was then sin-binned, but they stood firm while down to 14 and hit back when Nick Smith converted his own try on 35 minutes.
Stortford replied instantly through Sam Bryan, before the visitors reduced the deficit to 13-12 at half-time when winger Josh Hodson cut through the centre of the pitch to score.
Tuilagi drove over after the restart, only for Stortford to go 32-19 ahead with three tries in ten minutes.
Walker and Stannard (2) touched down, before Ollie Jones made it 39-19.
Chinnor refused to give in, and took home a four-try bonus point when Soane Tonga’uiha was driven over late on.
On Thursday, the Thame-based club were presented with the Oxfordshire Cup for 2020.
Chinnor’s 2nd XV, the Falcons, were due to face Oxford Quins in the postponed final on Thursday but their opponents withdrew.
It means they won the club’s eighth county cup by default, although it was still a significant achievement as most of the team were members of the 3rd XV, the Wildboys.
