Bailiffs moved in to evict campaigners from a house at Thrupp Lake in Radley, near Abingdon, before dawn yesterday.

A group of seven campaigners - four women and three men - took over Sandles House, by the side of the lake, in protest at plans by power giant RWE npower to dump ash from Didcot Power Station in it.

Npower was given a possession and eviction order at Oxford Crown Court on January 24 - but protesters were defiant that their campaign was not over.

The eviction began at around 5.30am. Squatter Lisa Peakman, 38, said: "I was woken by a loud bang and showered with broken glass from the French windows. The bailiffs were dressed in black and wore black balaclavas. There was no warning, they just smashed their way in."

More than a dozen bailiffs carried out a search of the five-bedroom property and ordered the seven squatters to leave the house.

One protester locked himself on to a concrete-filled oil barrel in a small cabin on top of a 35ft scaffold structure built by the squatters at the side of the house.

It took bailiffs nearly two hours to release him and the tower was then demolished.

Another squatter Dave said: "We may have lost round one, but we will re-group and consider our next course of action."

The Rev Malcolm Carroll, who is acting as a spokesman for the protesters, said: "We have planned for this, but it is still a terrible thing to see the bailiffs, supported by police, arrive.

"But our campaign is planned in phases, and this is just the first of them."

A member of action group Save Radley Lakes, Dr Peter Harbour, one of eight observers at the site, said: "The squatters have put up a brave fight against a powerful company, whose plans to use Thrupp lake as a dumping ground for fuel ash is to be condemned."

Npower spokesman Kelly Brown said: "The team of bailiffs working on behalf of RWE npower went in and removed most of the squatters, apart from one who had attached himself to a tower and, for health and safety reasons, we waited until it was safe to remove him."

Operations manager at the power station, John Rainford, said: "Our proposals have been developed with the full support of independent ecologists who will monitor all activity at Radley and ensure that every care is taken to protect the wildlife on the site."

Police arrested one protester, who was taken to Abingdon Police Station.

* Solicitors acting for Save Radley Lakes have written to npower to say work should not start until an application to register the lake as part of a 'Town Green' has been decided.

They warned the group might seek an injunction if work started before the application was decided.

At last the law prevails, the squatters have been evicted, of the three interviewed last night the male would only call himself 'the ant' and said he dug a tunnel, did he have planning permission? The two females had more ironwork around there faces than scaffolding around the building, a right desspot outfit they looked. I would guess they only lived there because it was rent free and they could claim there benefits as they had an address and really could not care less about Npower. Good riddance to them all.

Crikey Alan, when do you find time to post? I imagine ironing all those black shirts must keep you busy.

Why npower is wrong
1. Npower don't need Radley Lake, not 24/7, not ever!
2. Npower's big mistake: ruining their image while ruining our lake!
3. Npower's Ecological Image is unsustainable
4. Npower won't wash

Some food for thought
npower-station emissions - brownwash!
npower ash dumping -greywash!
npower ecological restoration - greenwash!
npower public relations - brainwash!
npower recycling -hogwash!
npower test-matches - whitewash!
npower electricity sales - won't wash!

Chris, Alan, Hanna and the Hun. If you have jobs, how do you have time to write during the day? Is that sponging?
Oh, and by the way, do you smell? and what do you hug?

Chris, Alan, Hanna and 'the Hun' - instead of making personal remarks about people you've probably never met and probably don't know much about, why don't you say something about the real issue here - caring about the environment? Maybe, just maybe, in the yeas ahead, as the globe gets warmer, the ice-sheets melt and sea levels rise, you'll look back and think that perhaps those environmental protestors had a point after all. (But by then, it may be too late.)

How long would Chris, Alan, Hanna and Hun last in freezing cold weather standing up for their beliefs - I doubt they could manage for a few minutes - Easy to pass opinions - Hard to stand up and fight what is wrong.
NPower are in the wrong but are too dogmatic to change their position. They bought the lake thinking it is perfectly alright to dump their waste ash. They are doing the same with their Power Station in Aberthaw. Whilst other Power Stations try to recycle, NPower do the minimum and try to make out they care about the community. John Rainford might believe he can create a wildlife site from out of a pile of ash, just as Adam was created by God! Who do I believe in - Not John Rainford.

Power to the protestors - we need people like this. Most of us are too idle to do more than just 'tut' and complain and we let major industries ride roughshod over local concerns or where there are real objections these are ignored (Hinksey virtual quarry being a case in point - this was supposed to be temporary!)Quite simply Npower are wrong and should leave the lake alone.

To all you do-gooders, nowhere di i say what Npower were doing is right, nowhere did i say i agreed with what there doing, what i said was i dont agree with people breaking the law as these 'protestors' were, illegally squatting in the house, building things they had no right to do and breaking the law. Nobody is above the law no matter what or who they are. Please read carefully before you make stupid comments. Ok so maybe Npower are wrong, but so far they have not broken any laws which i know about, 'Ant' and his mates have and paid the price, pity they were not thrown out on your lazy arse's this morning.

Alan
At last you show some positive thinking. If you are convinced that Npower might be wrong then come to our meeting in Hadland Road Community Centre, Abingdon at 8pm on Friday. There we are trying to save the lakes by legal means. The law allows town greens to be registered and therefore protected from development. We have applied to register Radley Lakes and, if the legal process goes through, then the lakes will be protected from devlopment. None by Npower, none by anyone else. We need all who care to come. This promises to be an interesting meeting and Alan, you would be welcome!

I hope one day someone puts a compulsary purchase order on Alan house.
I'm sure people will be there to help him out.
Mst of us are not quite so judgemental really.
Alan- all you need is a hug yourself, hunny. Might dispell some of that bitterness...
