Hospice finds prostitute for disabled man

A hospice helped a disabled man with a life-limiting condition find a prostitute.

Nick Wallis, 22, who suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, persuaded staff at Douglas House, in Oxford, that he should be allowed to experience sex before he died, even if it meant paying a prostitute.

The case posed a major moral dilemma for Sister Frances Dominica, the founder of Douglas House, and its ethics committee.

The decision was taken to support Mr Wallis and hospice nurse Chris Bloor helped him find a suitable woman over the Internet.

Mr Wallis, an artist, has mobility problems which affect his limbs, with his life expectancy in the 20s and 30s, decided to use his savings to pay for sex. Sister Frances and hospice managers agreed to help Mr Wallis after seeking legal advice. The use of the hospice was ruled out.

Sister Frances this week said: "It has to be said that the charity debated this request at length. It's the first time we have ever been asked such a question and it was discussed within our management team and ethics committee, with Nick's carers, lawyers and of course Nick himself."

Mr Wallis's story is featured on Tuesday in an episode of Children of Helen House, the BBC2 series about the East Oxford hospice for children and Douglas House, the neighbouring hospice for young adults.

Sister Frances said that ultimately it was decided that Mr Wallis had to be granted the dignity of being able to take the risk.

She said: "Nick finally decided that the only way forward was to pay for a sexual experience, with or without our support, and we therefore came to the conclusion that it was our duty of care to support Nick emotionally and to help ensure his physical safety."

Mr Wallis met the woman at his Northamptonshire home with a Douglas House nurse and another adult in a different room in case he needed them. Mr Wallis said he had always hoped that he would experience sex as part of a close relationship.

He said: "I began to accept that this might not happen for me. I wanted to know what sex was like even if this meant that I had to pay someone."

Good for him, and shame on anyone that disapproves! If you're going to help a disabled person lead a fuller life, why overlook something as important as sex? Just because the rest of us find it a 'slightly embarrassing' subject? How patronising it would be to assume that the disabled don't need it like the rest of us.

I think the hospice did the right thing, and others should take note. Welcome to the 21st century.

Well said Anthony, I absolutely agree. Well done to Sister Dominica for having the compassion and fortitude to support Nick in this - and well done to Nick for having the courage to ask.

I totally agree, this case has shown open mindedness and compassion for another persons views/choices. A poke in the eye for all the "political correctness" around today. I hope he enjoyed.

Good for him, and well done for the Hospice having the sense to allow him to use his own money for something he wanted. I would not approve of money from donations to be used for this but if anyone in this position can afford it then its a free country.

I am so glad that Antony was able to have people around him to help him fulfill his wishes. I congratulate Antony, Sister Dominica and the hospice (and ethics committee).

I support Mr Wallis and the Hospice in helping him to experience something that most of us take for granted.

It's interesting that so far everyone has agreed that this was the correct decision. I also fully support everyone concerned in this brae and compassionate decision. I hope the experience was exactly what Nick expected. It should be noted that the 'meeting' did not take place at Douglas House but at his home with a Dougles House nurse in a dfiiferent room if he needed them.

Nurse and other adult in a different room if he needed them? Was he planning on a 4-some, or what?

Shame on anyone that agrees with this, maybe you guy's should have really backed Nick & given him you female relative to bonk with! Well seeing as theres nothing wrong with it im sure it wouldnt be a problem

Do we think Miss Parmar isn't getting enough? :-)

Perhaps all those who agree with this would allow their daughters/sisters/mothers to be used the next time this situation arises.

Mr Barrington should consider that young lady was providing a very well paid for service.

Chris, says...

...a service that she chooses to provide. We're not talking about illegal street prostitution to fund a drug habit, but rather a perfectly legal arrangement both arranged and taking place in private, which the girl has chosen as her profession.

How on earth does agreeing with this mean you should volunteer your female relatives for it? Bad point, badly made.

Well done and congrats. Full marks to Nick for having the courage to articulate his thoughts on the matter and full marks to all who supported him.

As for Miss Parmar ... your post is beneath contempt really. Nuff said!

this particular case seems to be done and dusted, but the issue as to whether we ought to see sex as something we have a right to, or a service to buy and sell, is still debatable. I know it's 'the oldest profession' blah, blah, but I don't see any congratulations are in order.

I suppose the people whom disagree with the disision that has already taken place are in well meaningful relationships and do not have disabilites and can cop off whth whom they choose, Nick is not as fortunate as some people, just because he has a disabillity dosnt make him any different to any other red blooded male, so he paid for it so what!

boe, says...

it don't make him a bad person... just because you are all stuck in your mom's basement not getting any, doesn't mean he should do the same. Having had a cousin with MD, I can say at any time he may go, without much warning. A common cold could bring him down, why shouldn't he experience such a wonderful part of life before he goes?

kb, says...

Well good for him and how wonderful that these people all helped him to get laid. How disgusting to broadcast it to the whole world! Who cares!!!! I am sorry for his illness though!

I support everyone's decision, and I am especially supportive of the woman who allowed him to experience sexual intimacy. I read Woman At Point Zero, and I no longer want to have relations with them but I have paid them just for their company and conversation. I have found many of them to harbor deep resentment towards society in general. I would agree that extreme poverty drives them to perform this work. In the case of the lady who had relations with the young man, I should hope that she felt pride and satisfaction in fulfilling his carnal desire.
