Merry - we let the fans down
Nick Merry
Nick Merry

Nick Merry has felt the pain of a season of under- achievement at Oxford United more than most.

He had dearly hoped that he and his good friend Jim Smith would get the club back into the Football League at the second attempt after going so close the year before.

It didn't happen.

Indeed, it was never remotely close to happening.

And there was precious little joy in the cup competitions either, apart from one good performance in holding League One high-fliers Southend at home in the FA Cup.

But after Smith honourably chose to step down when it became apparent the team were not doing it for him, the person Merry and his fellow directors chose to take over the reins has gone on to prove a very wise appointment.

Darren Patterson may have found the job a testing one at the beginning, and results showed that during the early rebuilding stages, but the way they have finished the season, and the impressive way the former Northern Ireland international has gone about being the new No 1, have only confirmed Merry's belief that they made the right choice.

"It takes time for any manager to settle in, but Darren's proven his worth," Merry said.

"We believed he was the right choice when we appointed him and that view has only been strengthened over recent weeks."

There have been obvious highlights and low points for the Oxford United chairman from this season, a campaign that, despite the frustration of not challenging for the play-offs has seen some consistently good performances from certain individuals, like Luke Foster, Billy Turley, Barry Quinn and Adam Murray.

United will need the same next season, but with one of those consistent performers being a striker.

"There have been three or four who have had excellent seasons," Merry agreed.

"I think Foster has undoubtedly been the pick of them - he's been our star all season really.

"The low point for me probably was that 5-0 defeat at Rushden and maybe the highlight the 5-1 win over Farsley.

"It's not just about winning, or the scorelines, but the manner in which you play, and I think we've won in good fashion a few times recently."

Merry admits it will always be financially difficult for Oxford United until they own the stadium and can open up further revenue streams.

"It's a big loss for us this year, but we're pleased with the way the support has held up," Merry said.

"The fans have been fantastic, quite honestly, and we just hope they'll come back next season and we can give them a successful team to watch and one that is challenging at or near the top.

"We recognise that things haven't gone according to plan this season and that our supporters have once again gone beyond the call of duty, staying loyal, and continuing to come along in fantastic numbers.

"We dearly want to repay that loyalty with a winning team challenging for promotion next season, and with Darren, we are working hard to try to put that together.

"It has been a time or rebuilding and Darren and Mickey have turned things around.

"Now we will strengthen and assemble a squad who can deliver our dreams. We have two years' experience in this league and know what needs to be done to get out of it.

"One the playing side, I think people can see there's been genuine progress in the last couple of months . . . so much so, that we're really looking forward to the start of next season already."

Merry comes crawling out of the woodwork again when he sees an opportunity to entice fans to renew / buy season tickets. He even has the audacity to claim credit for Patto's appointment which is laughable when you think he was already the manager before they even took over, and they sacked him. We could arguably not even be in the confererence were it not for that intervention, what a joke! Talk about wise after the event, and what happened to the monthly updates ? The real let down this season apart from on the pitch is the stewardship from Merry....
Posted by: Long John Sliver on 10:01am Tue 29 Apr 08
If he really believes patterson is the way forward then he really is deluded. When the loan players return home and he has the same dross, that he bought in January left, we will be back into the same cycle of losing.
patterson out now!

How about he replaces the loan players he doesn't want with better players! Promotion next season! Patto's a legend!

Sounds very Kassam like, little communication through the season, then when the time is to renew your season ticket the campaign begins.

LJS may have a point, only time will tell.
Oh and grow up.

Why dont you idiots get off their backs.Merry is as passionate as us, at least he had the balls to try to do something about it. Full new season for Patto if we can start where we left off we will be ok, if not then i can under stand the moaning. And then you can all get on his back.
Posted by: Long John Sliver on 11:00am Tue 29 Apr 08
Yep, get off merry's back, he's done a fantastic job so far, oh and he now needs to con more into buying season tickets for super patto to zoom us to relegation, sorry promotion. lol.
patterson out now!

Nothing to do with season ticket sales. Fans have a choice, buy one or not bother. Oxford have and always had a hard core 4,000 that turn out so if you have no confidence in them you just as well go down the 420 and watch some proper dross.

As long as Patto signs Howard, Murray, Hand, Green and McAllister permanently and brings in maybe 2 or 3 more quality players we will DEFINITELY get promoted but more than likely win the league!

Some Oxford fans make me sick !

Why don't you try getting behind the manager and the team, if your not capable and that stupid then go away and become a plastic manc utd or chelski fan like loads of other idiots around Oxfordshire.

OUFC Till I Die.

Yet again the unoriginal nonsense Long John Sliver(??) spouts appears again.

Yes the loan players will be going back and guess what - Patto had proven himself adept at spotting the right kind of player for this club and will do so again.

How dare the Chairman of the Clus suggest to "supporters" that they but season tickets - whatever next?

Anti-pattos - you're obviously football geniuses - who would YOU replace Patto with?

Very simple answer. King the Lewes manager is leaving the club, look what he has achieved, would do a fantastic job at oxford.

The above remarks are by some other dickhead.

Probably the same ducker that posts negative stuff as me on TiU.

From being against Patterson, I now freely admit I was completely wrong about him and he now has my complete support and faith that he will do the right things to get us back into the League.

Likewise, Merry is an honest man and hopefully he will learn from his mistakes just as Patterson has done. If so, nothing can stop this club - MY CLUB - and this team from fulfilling their full potential.

Champions next year; we WILL be

Maybe Mr Merry had the right guy in place when he took over the club, and sub sequentially demoted him back down to youth team coach. We more than likely wouldn't be stuck down in the Bl Sq.

A lesson learned!!!!!

I am the same, and proud of it, just because people have differing opinions, you might not like, tough.

Also, I have had arguements with some who now may dislike me.

I’m inclined to agree with this statement. Five years ago who would have thought that we fall as low as the conference? In Five years time who is to say that we will not be back up in league 1. Of course we need good management and leadership if we are to achieve success. I have a funny feeling that next season is going to be a good one for us!

You look at the crowds that we get and the stadium we have in comparison to other conference clubs and wonder.……

Surly it is inevitable that we will eventually get back into the league.

Yeah like Nick Merry really wants us to be rubbish and unsuccessful and remain in this league. Get real. He wants us up as much as we do and at least he's got the gonads to get up there and give it a go. Kassam or Merry? I know which one I'd rather have

Now I can say for a fact that this oxford1965 is not the real one, he is an imposter, a bit of saddo realy, as the real deal is on assignment in Morocco with his company, in the middle of nowhere.
How do I know?, He's my brother.

I never had anything personally against Kassam. My understanding of the situation is that Nick Merry is a passionate oxford fan. Kassam whilst being a hugely successful businessman was never bothered about the football hence the reason why so many people were so critical of him. I could be wrong but this was my interpretation of events.

There does seem to be quite of lot of criticism of Nick at the moment. Some criticism would seem inevitable and perhaps even deserved as a consequence of failure on the pitch. Of course the obvious observation is that the club will not fund itself. Somebody needs to fund it!

Full marks to Patto, so many of us had given up hope but the season-end run in was great.

Of course Merry gives his biggest interview of the year just before the season ticket announcement, I don't think we should be surprised by this.

Don't knock him, he's a chairman of a football club what do you expect? Social skills? Sincerity? Humility? Transparency? Honesty? Accountability?

Eeet is interestant zat when you introduzed yourself to zees forum, you claimed to be the aimme -a friend- of the oxford1965, and yet later on, thees friend has become a familea relashon.

And this friend, or brother, seeminglee cut off from the modern world and all of it's tecnologee; he is still able to post on the noticeboard of TiU as most recently as yesterday.

Every liar seeks to conceal the truth, but not everyone who conceals the truth is a liar, nes pas?

Your kind of missing the point Simon. I don’t think Kassam had much time for the football. This is why he was a Cr*p chairmen. Supporters are fickle in football. Almost everybody supported the change of ownership at the time! Failure wasn’t in the script.

**** happens!

I read just the other day Kassam is worth around 200 million, yet he took us down rather than up-Yeah brilliant, we was top of league 2 with atkins yet slipped down to 8th cos kassam wouldn't give atkins anymore money, Merry may not be as minted, but I'd rather have a chairman thats TALKS to fans at games, goes home and away than a millionaire that was hardly at home games let alone away.Merry has brought Jim back, a Oxford legend that knows many great managers higher in the leagues, he's got contacts where we need them and Patto, Patto is eager, players respect him, and not he's bad looking either!!!
Merry any day, I didn't protest for Kassam out for that tart to ever come back!

Maybe not easy but how good do you have to be to get out of this league? A lot of the clubs are part timers with less income than us and cr*p training facilities. What the hell have we been doing? There is no excuse for not being in the top five next season. Perhaps we should bring in performance related pay where they get paid more money for being in the top five and a bonus if we win promotion.

How many chairman/owners pump endless amounts of their own money into their team? Not that many unless you are a multi billion/millionaire from Russia/USA and on a huge ego trip.

Next season will be once again a testing season for all concerned at Oxford as the latter stages set a pressident of winning ways which ALL concerned will want to continue. Hopefully Merry and his team will find every possible way to help the manager onto the road to glory.

This is what he should be judged on this comming season and NOT whether he manages to buy the stadium.

I didn't support the change at all thought it was very badly timed and at end of day we got relegated under Jim and Nick we were a few places and points away from relegation when they took over. That's why I don't think there wonderful!

Simon! I think of one if the problems with football is that people have very short memories. The change of ownership at the time was an extremely popular decision. A lot of people on this forum encouraged them to take over with great enthusiasm. I think you were in a minority if you were opposed to it at the time.

I acknowledge your point that things have not gone well. What would your solution be? Re-launch Mr Kassam as chairmen assuming he would want to come back. I’m happy for Mr Merry to have another pop at winning promotion next season personally.
