U's sweat on Foster scan
Luke Foster leaves the field with a injury
Luke Foster leaves the field with a injury

Oxford United defender Luke Foster will have a scan today on his injured knee to determine how long he will be out and whether he can return with the rest of the squad to pre-season training in July.

The club's double player-of-the-year had to be helped off the field midway through their 3-1 win at Ebbsfleet United on Saturday in the final game of the season.

His injury took the gloss of what was a magnificent first-half performance as the U's chalked up their fifth successive victory - and their ninth in the final 11 games - and manager Darren Patterson says everyone is just praying the damage isn't serious.

"Medial ligaments has been mentioned, but we're not sure," Patterson said.

"He'll have a scan on Monday and we will see how long he's going to be out.

"I'm just hoping it's nothing too bad because he's been excellent for us and he's a big part of my plans. We've got our fingers, toes and everything crossed for him."

United were quick out of the blocks at Ebbsfleet, and until Foster went off injured just before half-time, they attacked to devastating effect time and again.

Matt Green scored in 30 seconds, and went on to get a second goal to make it ten in half a season for the U's, and Phil Trainer took his tally to nine in what, for him, as being a very impressive end to his first season as a professional.

But once again it was Yemi Odubade who caught the eye, and with Green, the two of them carved open Fleet's sluggish back line.

"The reason we put them together was because of Ebbsfleet's clientele, similar to Farsley," said United's manager.

"It's always nice when it comes off. I thought they terrorised the opposition first half.

"Greeny's been chomping at the bit because he's missed a couple of games, when he's not started - and what a way to respond.

"Yemi was again excellent. If you look at his workrate now off the ball, it's such that, when we do win the ball, his starting position is so much better.

"In the first half 3-0 didn't flatter us, it could have been six or seven."

United finish off their season by sending a first team squad to Kettering this evening for a testimonial game, and Patterson will have discussions with players later in the week as a prelude to announcing his retained list before the weekend.
