Oxford United have experienced even more highs than the very many lows which have come their way over the period since their formation in 1893.

Milk Cup win

Celebrating the 1986 Milk Cup win

— Here are a few proud memories to keep you going through tough times:

— They are the only club to have won the championships of the current Divisions One and Two (or their equivalent) in consecutive seasons.

— They hold the record-winning margin for a Wembley final of the League Cup (in its many guises) and have experienced some tremendous victories in cup competitions.

— In the League Cup, United followed their Wembley triumph of 1986 with a run to the semi-finals in 1988 (beating Manchester United on the way) and also reached the quarter finals in 1970 and 1984.

— As a Third Division side in 1983-84, they beat Manchester United, Leeds and Newcastle on the way to a quarter final replay defeat at Everton.

— The U's have also experienced great moments of giant killing in the FA Cup. Highlights have included their becoming the first Fourth Division club to reach the quarter finals (beating the second best team in the country on the way); reaching the fourth round as a non- league club; and winning at Leeds and at Stamford Bridge. In 1982, as a Third Division side, United won three-nil away to a team which was at the time highly placed in the top flight.

— Apart from Liverpool and Spurs, Oxford have beaten every one of the leading clubs in league matches. League highlights have included a three-nil win over Arsenal to retain United's place in the top flight (1986), a win over reigning champions Everton (1986) and two victories over Manchester United, including that win in Ferguson's first match as manager.
