A 27-year-old landscape gardener who stole a £3 pair of underpants was ordered to pay a total of £335 when he appeared at Oxford Crown Court on Friday.

Judge Patrick Eccles heard that Matthew Webb, of Calder Way, Didcot, stole the pants from a shop in the town in January and was convicted after a trial at Oxford Magistrates' Court - which put him in breach of a previous community order.

Judge Eccles fined Webb £50 and ordered him to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £270 costs.

The judge has been too lenient. He should really have been put in prison.

a £15 victim surcharge? Did he de-bag the Manager of the store. Unbelievable really that someone was arrested, the file passed to the CPS and he was then taken to court. All for a £3 pair of shreddies. I hope it was worth it.

Again i'd like to refer to the poor girl who was knocked down and killed by a cyclist. The cyclist was fined £2200.

By this logic, that girl's life was worth a little less that 7 pairs of pants.

I dont think any further comment is required!
