A sheltered housing complex opened by the Duke of Edinburgh in 1974 could soon be replaced with houses and flats.
Owners of the now vacant Royal Berkshire Court in Green Close, Didcot, want to demolish it and put up 26 houses and a two-storey block of six flats - all affordable homes.
South Oxfordshire District Council is considering the application.
The bedsit complex was home to 50 elderly residents - many in their 90s - until two years ago when they were rehomed.
Owners A2 Housing Group said the buildings were out-dated and rooms difficult to let.
Development director Steve Coggins said: "There is no agreed start date, but we expect the construction work to take 12 to 18 months."
