Train windscreen shatters

Up to 500 people were evacuated from a train at Didcot today after its windscreen was smashed.

The windscreen on the train, the 1.51pm First Great Western service from London Paddington to Malvern, via Oxford and the Cotswold Line, was broken on the approach to Didcot Parkway station at about 2.30pm.

FGW spokesman Lance Cole said: "The train was terminated at Didcot and customers were put on other trains and we also put some road transport in for the smaller stations.

"We take it very seriously and we are investigating, but at this stage we don't know the cause.

"The usual causes are vandalism or operational. It could have been a bird or a stone, or something else."
