Accidental verdict for friends' death

Two men were killed speeding at about 80mph in a car while a friend filmed them on a mobile telephone, a coroner heard today.

James McCabe, of Hemmingway Drive, Bicester, and Adam Davis, of Oxlip Leyes, Bicester, died when Mr McCabe's red Peugeot 205 GTi left the B4030 Middleton Stoney Road in Bicester on the night of Monday, August 6.

Both Mr McCabe, 21, and Mr Davis, 19, died from multiple injuries.

Forensic scientist Peter Jenningscorr said: "At the point Mr McCabe went out of control he was travelling in the region of 83mph plus or minus 10 per cent, up to 91mph."

Christopher Slatter, of Windel Gardens, Bicester, was in his blue Citreon Saxo with a friend who received a mobile phone call saying there was going to be a "drive past" and that Mr McCabe was going to show off.

He said: "I went to watch. My friend Christina got another call saying they were turning around in Middleton Stoney and coming back and to get ready to film. I filmed it."

A grey Skoda Fabia GTi was waiting at the Chesterton junction to turn right on to the Middleton Stoney Road.

Driver Anna Kennedy, 36, of Akeman Street, Kirtlington, was on her way to Tesco in Bicester.

She said she only saw the Peugeot coming towards her as she pulled out of the junction.

She said she completed the turn and Mr McCabe's car went past her and then lost control.

Police investigating the incident arrested Ms Kennedy and charged her with careless driving.

She is due to appear at Banbury Magistrates' Court on May 12.

Oxfordshire Coroner Nicholas Gardiner said: "This has to be regarded as an accidental death.

"I express my sympathies to members of the families and their friends who will be affected by this."
