Miss Oxford Mail contest heats up

Entries are flooding in from young women in Oxfordshire who are preparing to take part in this year's Miss Oxford Mail competition.

The organisers of the Miss England competition say they have received lots of entries after the current Miss England, Georgia Horsley, 21, urged them to take part.

Ms Horsley, 21, won Miss England last year, following in the footsteps of Eleanor Glynn, 21, from Sandford-on-Thames, Oxford.

After receiving the Miss England crown in July, Ms Horsley went on to compete in Miss World in China.

Miss England organiser Angie Beasley said: "We are starting to get some really good entries coming through from girls in Oxfordshire.

"We usually get plenty of entries from across the county because two girls who won Miss Oxford in recent years went on to win Miss England and compete in Miss World.

"Daniella Luan became Miss England in 2002 and then Eleanor Glynn was Miss England in 2006 - Oxford girls often seem to do well in this competition.

"It's great to be joining forces with the Oxford Mail this year and there is still time to enter this year's contest."

The Oxford Mail has joined forces with Miss England to find a young woman to represent Oxford in the next Miss England semi-final, which is being held at Champneys health resort in Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire, on June 16-17.

Organisers are looking for local girls who want the chance to compete. Successful entrants will be invited to attend a photo audition at the Oxford Mail next month.

Sydney Kar, 18, of Cheney Lane, Headington, Oxford, who was a Miss Cardiff semi-finalist last year and is studying law, said: "I would like to complete my course at university and become a barrister.

"I would like to balance my career with having a family and also continue to raise money for various charities."

Victoria Cross, 20, of Morrell Avenue, Oxford, said: "I have achieved nine GCSEs and three A-Levels and am currently in my third year of a degree, with a year to go."

Miss Cross's ambitions include becoming a well-known model.
