New shops but at what cost?
Is council leader John Goddard right when he says that Westgate is really good news for the people of Oxford'?
I'm worried about the impact of the increase in traffic that the Westgate expansion will bring.
The Westgate partnership predicts a 10 per cent increase in car trips into the Westgate each week.
Is this really good news for an already over-polluted city centre?
The Westgate development is bringing a massive expansion of retail space, but is it right that more shops equals good news?
Bringing in the big brands on such a massive scale is a real threat to independent retailers and the Covered Market, the things that make Oxford special.
Finally we're told it will bring in affordable housing.
Fifty per cent of the homes will be affordable, or 64 of the total - not counting the loss of 12 in the demolition of Abbey Place. Is this the best the council can do?
To me, the development of the new Westgate seems like a missed opportunity for Oxford.
Should it really be a goer?

I would imagine the plans were finalized when the Liberals were bending over backwards to suit the Indian Subcontinental Taxi representaties who later turned coat and began legally using the bus and cycle lanes for their own purposes.
