Trams are solution

I was very intrigued with the letter of Sushila Dhall of the Green Party (Oxford Mail, April 26, City Trams to Cut Pollution).

This is a unique way to cut city pollution levels.

May I suggest one step further and do as Manchester did about eight years ago, introducing a metro service that connects Bolton and Manchester with an electric powered train to run to Manchester Exchange Station. Then it becomes a tram running on tram lines to Manchester Piccadilly Centre then on to Piccadilly Station and then returned to Bolton via the same route. I myself travelled on this route when I visited Bolton in 2001. I dare say Manchester has expanded this system by now to such places as Stockport and others.

They have a tram network covering the whole city centre.

I have probably wasted my time on this suggestion as Oxford City and County Councils will more than likely say they have not got the resources for such a scheme. Just like they usually do if they have not thought of it before somebody else, just look at the money they are raking in from car parks and the bus gates and cameras.

I am sure the population of Bolton will be very pleased to hear that they have had a tram service to Manchester for such a long time, but I doubt if anyone knows how to get on it as this line has not been built! The trams run from BURY via VICTORIA Station (Exchange closed in 1969) to the City and on to Altrincham. They have been running since 1992 and are highly succesful and due to to expand in the next couple of years.

Yes, trams should come to Oxford. They've it in Manchester so Oxford should have them too. Good idea.

The system in Manchester should be used in Oxford.
