Inspirations - Style Guide
What’s hot, what’s not

Our quick guide to interior style trends for 2008 Out Minimalism: Martin Waller of interior design specialists Andrew Martin says: "Minimalism has been dethroned by a much glossier look. Look for heavy silks, silk velvets, glazed silks, devoré velvets and even fake furs. "Different textures - rough weaves, smooth silks, basketwork, grainy leather - are as important as colour and pattern."

In Colour and pattern: Sally Bendelow, head of home design at Marks & Spencer, says: "Don't hold back, mix different patterns by featuring them on furniture, bedding, tableware and accessories. For instant style - a flamboyant rug will make all the difference to a room."

In Eastern inspired design: Wallpaper featuring classic cherry blossom designs, glossy, lacquered furniture or accessories, are all hot. Sally Bendelow says: "Oriental florals in large scale prints, decorative beading and glossy finishes combine for our Fusion look. The colour palette is red, soft cream and menthol mint with highlights of black, gold and lime."

Out Boring cushions have been culled. Now there is a superbreed which make a statement. They are either all-out luxurious and embroidered, zingily colourful or boastfully macho in leather and hide.

In All that glitters needn't be gold, but it must be shiny! B&Q design manager Fionnuala Johnston says: "Metallics are huge for textiles, walls and tiles. Glitter, sparkle and sheen will give your home an edge."

In Eco homeware: pieces that look like they were created by designers or craftsman - made with love, care and skill. George Bond, regional director of the British Interior Design Association (BIDA), says: "Creating an eco-friendly living space by investing in recycled home furnishings will be a big trend. Watch out for more inventive and innovative use of recycled materials such as linoleum, concrete and bamboo."
