Oxford shoppers have given the thumbs up to Pay by Touch - a system that allows goods to be purchased using only a fingerprint.
The high-tech fingerprint recognition system had its UK launch in the Headington Co-op, in London Road, in March and was later rolled out in branches in Banbury Road, Summertown and Black Bourton Road, Carterton.
A recent survey of 1,000 shoppers showed 88 per cent welcomed the system and more than 75 per cent said they would like to see other retailers offering it. Compared to Chip and Pin, 85 per cent thought Pay by Touch was more convenient and 76 per cent thought it was more secure.
Ben Reid, of the Midcounties Co-op, said: "We continually strive to enhance the shopping experience for our customers and we are delighted that so many of our customers and members support our initiative in trialling Pay by Touch in Oxford.
Tom Fischer, vice president of the San-Francisco based Pay by Touch, said: "It is clear that the security, speed and convenience offered by Pay by Touch is extremely appealing to consumers and we are very pleased with the enthusiastic adoption of the service."
