An accident on the A34 north of Oxford has now been cleared, which should ease traffic heading for the CLA game fair, according to police.

Traffic was gridlocked this morning as thousands of drivers headed for the CLA Game Fair at Blenheim Palace in Woodstock.

During the rush-hour, traffic was at a standstill on the A44 approaching Woodstock, and an accident on A34 northbound just after the Peartree interchange added to the congestion.

One car overturned about 8.30am. Claire Gourlay, a spokesman for Oxford Police, said: "The driver was fine and did not need any treatment from paramedics.

"The vehicle was recovered shortly after 10am and the northbound carriageway is now open."

Drivers also faced delays on the A420 and A40 and Stuart Thompson, a spokesman for the Highways Agency, said: "The incident on the A34 contributed to the traffic delays."

Royalty and celebrities are joining the expected 138,000 visitors descending on the palace for the 50th anniversary Game Fair.

The event, which continues over the weekend, is the world's biggest sports exhibition and the national event for 50,000 owners of rural properties represented by the Country Landowners' Association.

Tomorrow, the Duke of Edinburgh will be popping in to tour the show and also present long service awards to gamekeepers.

Among the many celebrities expected to attend are Elaine Page and Bernard Cribbins, who have set their sights on raising money for The Children's Trust in a charity clay pigeon shoot.

They have had three years to sought this out since the last debacle and the traffic problem is still the same. God help anyone who has a heart attack or is taken seriously ill in Yarnton,Begbroke, Bladon and the other villages around the Palace! What is the point of the helicopter flying round all day causing annoyance to residents just to report the obvious that 'the roads are gridlocked'.
4x4's abound, still musn't let them gather dust now were not running the little darlings to school in them.
I suppose the Duke will be flying in so it won't effect him.
But look on the brightside its supposed to bring in £6m to the local economy so we should all see a reduction in Council Tax next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So the accident happened at about 8:30, I was at work in Yarnton at 8:20 and had driven passed 3 miles of stationary traffic from Headington on the A40 to get there. Can't see how the A34 accident can be blamed for that!

This event only comes around once every 4 years, people look forward to it and it's held in a brilliant location. So what if there are 3 days of rubbish traffic, 3 days in 4 years is nothing. What does it matter if there are people travelling to the event in their 4x4's? People carriers and estates are just as bad so stop singling out the minority. I will be making my way to the event this weekend with my family and I'm thoroughly looking forward to it!

Quote of the Day!

Sitting in the traffic jams for 90 minutes on A420/A34 listening to Radio Oxford, they had contacted the Police about the problems and their reply was

"The traffic situation is nothing to do with us, the Highways Agency should be sorting it out!"

Talk about passing the buck!

Just taken us an hour to get home which would normally take 15 minutes, tried cutting through Cowley Road, Iffley Road, Donnington Bridge Road, all gridlocked, must be people trying to get to Blenheim!!!!

Left my office at 12 in Oxford, got home to Eynsham at 1.30, and this is using the bus! Traffic for toll bridge is back to Oaken Holt - and they are still charging, nothing new there then. I am going the the Game Fair tomorrow as well, but, come on, the organisers/police should have thought about the possible traffic congestion. I hope that IF the Game fair is at Blenheim again, someone takes a serious look at the problems this year for us "normal" people trying to go about our daily lives!

Because some of us aren't going to the CLA! We wanted to get to work, and they had appauling sign posting for those vehicules NOT going to the CLA.

Yes, it's only once every 4 years, but I was over an hour late to work (I left at 7.30am!), so now I have to stay late for an hour, which no doubt means I'll be caught up in the traffic leaving.

They should have a little more respect for the local businesses. It's all very well saying "It's going to be busy", but it wouldn't have hurt to have put a sign up saying those going THROUGH Woodstock could have used the RH lane, which was cordoned off.

You great big bunch of whingers.

Is it any wonder nobody wants to come to your area. Once every four years and you moan. You had plenty of warning.

It is of great benefit to the local economy.

You should be ashamed.

Whinging, ungrateful pillocks.

I was stuck in the traffic this morning for 1 and half hours. It was a nightmare!! I did leave as early as I could but got stuck big time. We did have plenty of warning but are things that could be done to avoid such gridlock.

Have event on Saturday and sunday or Saturday, Sunday and a bank holiday Monday then there will not be so many people heading to work.

Organise a park and ride scheme so that the amount of cars are the surrounding rides is minimum.

Seperate the CLA game fair traffic from the non CLA game fair traffic so that others can carry on normal life without being stuck behind the slow moving traffic.

The A34, A420, A4095, Oxford Ring road and other routes were absolute grid lock. Just had to sit in and be patient!

I set off from home in Madley Park Witney at 9.20am and got to Pear Tree at 12.10 pm. Almost 3 hours!! There were posters about the event, but I did not realise the traffic would be so bad! They should keep these events to Saturday and Sundays.

I wonder what Councillor Ian Hudspeth of Bladon is going to say now. Was it not he who stated earlier in the week in the Oxford Mail, that the lesson learnt from three years ago should ensure that traffic problems would not happen this time. WELL IAN TAKE IT FROM ME AND ALL ABOVE IT WAS A DAMNED SIGHT WORSE!

Sorry but I was one of the people blocking the road trying to get to the game fair today but will just say it was an amazing event and is in such a wonderful setting, you are so lucky to have this on your doorstep you should be proud, I live near Windsor and we have to put up with tourists most months of the year and especially this around this time. So at least you only get it once in four years.

I spend over an hour on the A34, driving from Abingdon to Yarnton. I gave up trying to get to work as I was already late and may have taken another hour from the point I gave up at 9:15. The signs only tell you there is an event on. Are we supposed to book a day off work every time there is an event on in West Oxfordshire, just in case the roads are grid locked? Good job I have an understanding boss, I took the day off.

But you had time to sit on the internet whinging about being late... You should have got on with your work and left on time!

Some people NEED to have someone else to blame.
