Party goes on after carnival

The Regal, which opened earlier this year, will be throwing open its doors to some of the 35,000 people expected to descend after the carnival on Sunday, July 6.

Everything from live bands to street art, contortionists to dancers, along with dramatic costumes and masks to fit in with the carnival's masquerade theme are planned.

Carnival organiser Ian Nolan said: "We are really excited because it means there is somewhere safe for people to go to carry on dancing afterwards.

"We had more than 100 bands apply to perform at the carnival and many of them who we could not fit in on the stages will get a chance to be involved at The Regal. I think it is going to be great."

The carnival finishes at 6pm, and then The Regal starts - with music and entertainment lasting until midnight.

Entry to the event costs £1, with proceeds going towards next year's carnival.

Mr Nolan said: "Hopefully it will raise some much-needed funds for us."

On stage will be a line-up of Oxford bands including indie-rockers Not My Day and the Oxford Gospel Choir.

Dancers from carnival band Sol Samba will be getting everyone on their feet, along with performers from street runners Oxtricks.

Regal general manager Jason Preston said: "We are delighted to be lending our support to the carnival, an amazing community event and the largest of its kind in Oxfordshire.

"For many generations, the Regal has been at the heart of the community and in its restored splendour will create a magical setting for an evening of fabulous live entertainment.

"There could not be a better way to round up this fantastic event."

Mr Nolan said he was looking forward to having a pint at the after-show party once everything was cleared up from the day's procession and related events.

He added: "It is something we have been thinking about for a long time and we are really glad the Regal have come on board."
