Officers launched a murder probe when Maurice Batts, 64, died in hospital on September 9 about 10 days after he was found in a canal barge at Southam Road, Banbury, with severe injuries.

Det Supt George Turner said: "I am appealing for anyone who spoke to Maurice in the days leading up to the incident.

"If you spoke to Maurice, particularly between September 27 and 29, then it is very important that you get in touch.

"I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of the boatyard at Southam Road, or in Springfield Avenue, Banbury, between 10pm on September 27 and 10am on September 28."
