Campaigners who want to stop Radley Lakes, near Abingdon, being used as a dump for fuel ash from Didcot Power Station have failed in their latest bid.

Members of the Save Radley Lakes campaign, including their water vole mascot, picketed County Hall in Oxford before councillors discussed planning conditions relating to the scheme, which was approved in January.

Alison Prewett, a teacher at Fitzharrys School in Abingdon, said before the meeting: "I spent a wonderful day last week with 180 11 year olds in the lakes area and they all had a marvellous time. To think that's all going to be gone is really quite horrifying."

Members of the Save Radley Lakes questioned whether an Environmental Impact Assessment should have been completed before the council could decide on the application.

But councillors agreed in principle to the conditions, which related to crossing a byway, drainage and de-watering.

A decision whether to turn the site into a town green - safeguarding the lakes - is expected in the next two months.

So, Just what is the relationship between Oxfordshire County Council and nPower? Why are any comments regarding this immediately removed?

Throughout the whole campaign, there have been occasions when NPower has been criticised in the forum on the Mail Series website. As soon as any criticism is levied, it is removed.

I bet someone at NPower threatens legal action - NPower are very fond of injunctions which they use to prevent protest. This is just another example of the power of the press being muted by a large powerful corporation.

NPower could have threatened to sue Oxfordshire County Council unless they got their planning permission - it would not have been put in writing but the threat existed all the same.

NPower cut down trees without a forestry commission licence but the Forestry Commission have decided not to prosecute them - what a surprise.

This is a Company that uses the law to further its own ends but doesn't obey the law as it ought.

The latest from the lakes is that Npower prevented a swan rescue taking place today because of "security", so the swan was left to suffer in agony while NPower security staff kept two legitimate swan rescue team members at bay preventing them from rescuing the injured bird.
