A schoolboy shocked by the poverty he saw in India is determined to raise money for the orphanage he visited.

Oliver Bishop, 14, visited The Care and Compassion Children's Home in Goa, which is supported by Bicester-based charity The Kalji Trust.

The Bicester Community College pupil took sweets, books and clothes for the children during his visit last month - but said nothing could prepare him for the experience.

Oliver, of Derwent Road, Bicester, said: "We saw a lot of slums and people living on the street which was quite upsetting. It's quite weird because there was a big five star hotel and then a slum next door.

"There are just so many poor people. I didn't realise how many there are, nobody cares for them. They have to beg for money.

"It's really different. We've got so much compared to them and we don't realise really until we go and see it."

Oliver visited the project with fellow Bicester Community College pupil Shane Halterman, 18.

The teenagers spent time playing and talking to the children in the orphanage, which looks after 18 youngsters aged five to 16.

The Orchard Baptist Church has supported the orphanage in Panjim for more than four years, and formally set up The Kalji Trust about 12 months ago. It has raised money by holding quiz nights, band concerts, treasure hunts and an It's a Knockout-style competition. Oliver said they now planned to hold a gig.

Trustee chairman Kevin Prior, of Buckingham Road, said: "Most of these children come from the slum areas. Some have no relatives at all and were just living on the streets in pipes and in garbage bins."

Mr Prior added the charity, which takes its name from the local word for compassion, also paid for the children's education. He added they were also looking to raise £80,000 for a permanent base.

Mr Prior, 50, said the home currently cost about £12,000 a year to run. Most of the money is raised by the trust in Bicester.

He said: "It's amazing what you can do with just a little bit of money."

Mr Prior added he wanted to thank everyone who supported the trust's work.
