Oxford's showpiece Broad Street went up in flames last night with an incendiary fire display to launch Oxfordshire's Millennium celebrations.

The centrepiece of the event was a bamboo spire holding a fiery pendulum, created by artist Ted Dewan and a team of students.

Each full swing of the pendulum counts off one of the 1,000 years of Oxfordshire, Mr Dewan, who lives in North Oxford, has joined forces with French arts event company Carabosse to set up the Luminox fire installations, which will be lit up until Saturday night.

Mr Dewan said: "My legs are like jelly, but it's exciting to see it. It will be hard to go back to normal life after this."

Cath Nightingale, a spokesman for Oxford Inspires, said: "It's great to see the spire in place in Broad Street. I always had faith that Ted would be able to complete the job in time."

Caroline Begalla, 30, a volunteer with Carabosse, said: "It's a magical and beautiful atmosphere - I think people will get a lot out of it."

Arts Council spokesman Peter Hewitt added: "An estimated 14,000 people will be on the streets over the next three days, not just watching, but participating in a whole range of activities rooted in the arts.

"Giving more people the opportunity to experience the arts is an important part of what the we do, and I'm glad that we have been able to give our support to Luminox."

Great event! It was a real pleasure to be able to wonder around Broad Street and soak up the beautiful atmosphere. I hope that this event can be the start of bringing Broad Street back a place for people to linger and enjoy rather than just a car park.

No pendulum there when I went yesterday evening. Underwhelming would sum the whole thing up for me. Really don't see the link with 1000 years of Oxfordshire either.

Bah humbug claire!, i went last night and there was a pendulum, you must have been asleep!, it was a fantastic event, well done oxford!!

Not bah humbug at all! There was something that I suppose could have been a pendulum, but it wasn't attached to the bamboo spire - it was hanging from a crane - and it wasn't moving. I am entitled to my opinion, thank you very much, and it did nothing for me. I am very pleased if everyone else thought it was fantastic, but I thought it was a waste of time and money. So there!

Claire, you couldn’t be more wrong, the “bamboo thing” has a pendulum attached to it!, its on tonight and tomorrow night, would suggest you revisit!!! And for the record your opinions are full of substance, so there X2!!

Paul - Why are you quoting me as saying "bamboo thing"? I called it a "bamboo spire" which is what it is referred to as in the above article. Perhaps you visited later than me and the pendulum was fixed to the spire, but it certainly wasn't at 7 o'clock yesterday evening.

Just because I have a different viewpoint to you doesn't make me wrong and you right.

hello there,we were there last night between 7:30pm and 9pm.There was a ball of fire dangling from a crane blowing in the breeze, but it was not attached to the spire,We asked each other what its purpose was as we expected it to be lit somehow. But none the less it was a good display.

I couldn't see any connection between the flames and Oxfordshire history, unless they were intended to replicate the burning of the martyrs in Broad Street in 1555/6, in which case it was in extremely poor taste.

It was all quite pretty, but I would prefer not to see my council tax go up in smoke. Notices said that people could make a voluntary contribution of £1 each, but I saw no means of paying anything. (Nor did I see any pendulum, for that matter.)

A better way of celebrating a thousand years of Oxfordshire would be to build a fine new Centre for Oxfordshire Studies. As it is, the county council proposes to make the present one smaller and meaner in order to create a better shopping mall at the Westgate. That’s how much Oxfordshire County Council really cares about its heritage: the celebrations this year are all smoke and mirrors.

I went on Friday night and while it was entertaining, I couldn't help wondering about the environmental impact of all those fires and also the water fountain structure that was splashing around. Carbon footprint and all that...

Didn't go but saw the news report, least they could have done was set alight to the so-called work of art tower and got it all over in one go. Modern artists take the ****.

Are the organisers of this party (which is fun!) at all concerned about carbon emissions? Surely they should be planting tress not creating smoke!
