A piece of land in Abingdon described as an eyesore could be transformed into an MG-themed mini-park.

Abingdon town councillors discussed the idea for improving the land at the corner of Drayton Road at their budget meeting.

But Tory councillors said the money - £10,000 set aside for the scheme - should go towards paying for a Police Community Support Officer.

But the ruling Liberal Democrats argued it was wise to save for the future and said the money would not be enough to pay for a PCSO.

The council's Abingdon in Bloom committee hopes to get financial support for the project from the Vale of White Horse District Council and town council's Joint Environmental Trust and from the Abingdon-based MG Car Club.

The Ock mini-park idea is in its infancy and no firm plans have been drawn up.

Tory Sandy Lovatt said the money was unlikely to be spent this year. The project had not even been costed and there was no need to put money aside.

Lesley Legge said the land was an eyesore. She said: "It's close to the old MG factory and I would like to see something in the town that shows our connection with MG. It would be a place for many visiting MG owners and enthusiasts who have nowhere to go."
