A classics master at Abingdon School has left £50,000 in his will to his old school and two churches in the town.

And for one church, the bequest could not have come at a better time. Hugh Randolph taught at Abingdon School for 30 years and was involved in St Michaels and All Angels church in Park Road.

Mr Randolph, a bachelor, died in February last year and left an estate worth about £1.6m. Most went to his family, but he left £30,000 to St Michael's church and £10,000 each to his old school and St Helen's church in Abingdon.

Last year St Michael's church underwent its five-yearly architectural survey which revealed the floor needed replacing in the next 18 months. The under beams are ageing and the report said the whole floor needed taking up and replacing. The cost has been put at more than £100,000.

The Rev Dr Peter Doll is the vicar of St Michael's and also St Nicolas in Abingdon. He said: "His bequest is a wonderful gesture and could not have come at a more appropriate time.

"The money from Mr Randolph will go towards the cost but we shall have to raise funds from other sources and activities."

Born in 1936 into a clerical family, Mr Randolph was a devout churchman throughout his life. His father was an Archdeacon of Hereford.

St Michaels and All Angels opened 140 years ago and on Wednesday will be commemorating its birthday with a celebration service.

Charlotte Mello, of Abingdon School, said Mr Randolph left a "very generous legacy" which enabled the school to commission two new stained glass windows in his memory.
