Flooding: Evacuees 'in a daze'
 |
| Nick Gladwin of Earl Street was evacuated at 3am. He is pictured with his house mates Frodo and Adam just before they set off for the Kassam Stadium |
Evacuees who fled their homes in Osney last night have described the flooding chaos as a nightmare.
This morning 36 people were waking up at the rescue centre at the Kassam Stadium in Oxford.
About 90 people were evacuated as floodwater swamped homes in Osney at around 3am.
Many people, including families and the elderly, spent the night sleeping on chairs in sleeping bags, or on the floor of executive boxes at the stadium.
Most failed to get any sleep while others are this morning trying to get back and salvage possessions from their flood-hit homes.
Kenneth Inness, 69, of Earl Street, off Botley Road, was rescued from his home by boat and taken to the rescue centre.
He said: "I and sort of like in a daze. It's like a bad dream. This is my worst nightmare and I can't wake up."
Boxes of dry and warm clothes have been delivered to the stadium overnight.
They are being handed out to the evacuees because many of them turned up cold and wet.
Some volunteers from St John Ambulance and British Red Cross have donated some of their own clothes and shoes to flood victims.
The stadium has also been delivered water, nappies, toothpaste and children's clothes.
Express Holiday Inn is providing breakfast for the new evacuees as well as those who remain at the rescue centre after being flooded out at the weekend.
It is not clear when the evacuees will be allowed to return home, but organisers at the rescue centre are expecting more flood-affected families to arrive later today.
The rescue centre has decided this morning that it will remain open until Friday at the very least.
