May morning debate will run and run

One of the city's most celebrated days passed yesterday without any broken limbs.

Each year we report on thousands of people who gather at Magdalen Bridge for the May Day celebrations to listen to the choir.

And, every 12 months, there are a handful who manage to launch themselves off the bridge and into, the inevitably, shallow depths.

The jury is out as to whether this relatively recent tradition should be allowed to continue and whether closing the bridge is a little over-the-top.

Many feel allowing people to potentially throw themselves into casualty is irresponsible and a sting on the taxpayer.

Meanwhile, others think it is equally excessive to block the bridge - a tad big brother-ish and even spoiling people's fun.

The problem is, it surely is not illegal to jump off a bridge? Just a bit stupid.

The debate is set to run and run for many more years.
