I've had my worst week's cycling for ages - I mentioned in a previous column that I'm pregnant and am therefore terribly forgetful at the moment. This week, I managed to lose my entire set of bike lock keys, so I couldn't unlock any of the bikes I have access to.

I WAS in a black cab returning from the vet with a spayed bitch on my lap, wishing I had a bike trailer to tow the dog in. We were discussing the roads, as you do. The cabbie was no happier than I am about the fact that private hire vehicles - minicabs - will soon be allowed to use Oxford's bus lanes. He predicted a lot more accidents. I didn't disagree.

Predictably, perhaps, the free bus pass scheme for over-60s that came into force on, erm, April Fools' Day, has turned out to be something of a farce in Oxford.

Well, the crinkle of foil wrappers has finally failed to bring my kids running for more chocolate and after a binge week of Easter egg eating, we're all vowing to never to eat chocolate again (Ok, I'm not, but I might vow never to let the kids eat mine again!).

Only 20 years ago, car ownership was, incredibly, half what it is today. Roads were places where people lived, walked, cycled, talked, shopped - and drove.
