Owner: No, it's not a nice dog

The owner of a dog which mauled a young girl has admitted it is "not a very nice dog" around children and should have been muzzled.

Julie Jones's three-year-old Patterdale terrier, Chaz, left Reah Minns, of Greater Leys, needing two operations after it bit her left leg.

And when the Oxford Mail went to see the dog, which has been given away to new owners, it lunged at our photographer.

But Miss Jones, who was arrested and cautioned over the attack on Reah, said she warned the seven-year-old not to approach as she walked two dogs outside her block of flats in Southfield Park, East Oxford.

She also admitted the dog had previously bitten her niece's daughter and that she always told children not to come near it.

Reah was staying with her grandmother, who lives in the same building as Miss Jones, on Sunday, August 24, and was heading outside at about 11am.

Miss Jones, 43, said she was walking Chaz and her son's puppy. She added: "Her grandmother shouldn't have allowed her to come out at that moment. She knows that my dog is not great with children.

"I was saying to this little girl 'can you please go upstairs'. She came outside and the puppy was getting really excited and somehow it got out of my hand.

"She screamed, which made the puppy more excited, and I still had the other dog in my other hand. The puppy's running after her, she's running around and I'm telling her 'stop running, it's not going to hurt you'."

Chaz, who was on an extendable lead, then chased after Reah.

"In that split second somehow the extendable lead that was on lock came loose," said Miss Jones.

"I heard a growl and I pulled back on the lead. I was screaming for help, trying to get her uncle, who was looking out of the window, to come down.

"The grandmother came out and I said 'I'm sorry, I didn't realise'.

"It didn't bite chunks out of her leg. It's probably where I pulled the dog back. I probably saved her leg more.

"I didn't allow the dog to attack her. I felt really bad afterwards and I sat with Reah and her grandmother waiting for the paramedics to arrive."

She added: "He did bite my niece's daughter. It wasn't as bad as this one. If any children come round the dog I always say 'can you not come round, it's not a very nice dog'. I should have got a muzzle, but you just don't think."

Miss Jones said she wanted to get Chaz put down immediately, but her son persuaded her to give it away after the police decided not to remove the dog.

She said: "I don't want it back. If Reah's grandmother lives in the same block of flats I want them to feel safe around here. I feel really bad."

Last night, Reah's mum, Nicola McCavery said: "The dog should've been des- troyed.

"She had the dog on an extendable lead without a muzzle, knowing it was dangerous to children.

"I think it is disgusting that the police have let her keep it - I feel let down by the police. What if it bites another child or Reah bumps into it again?"

"I should have got a muzzle, but you just don't think" The woman is too stupid to own a dog and should be banned from ever owning one.

What do the police have to say about this? Whay was the dog not seized and put down? Why was the owner not given a serious fine? Blaming the child and her grandmother..what feeble excuses!! And Oxford Mail..why not tell us where this dangerous animal now lives??

Only a court can order the dog to be put down - not the Police, although a responsible owner may have chosen to have down that voluntarily.

Im Reahs mum, Reah is scared for life, the owner of this horrible dog, need to take responsibilty ,you can get fined for letting your dog foul on the pavement, but nothing has been about this the woman has been let off with a caution.

Its a "bad dog" because it has a poor owner. The dog should be confiscated and retrained and if that doesn't work, put down.

Same should happen to the owner.

all dogs can bite, its how a owner controls it that counts. why was it off the lead?! I got attacked by a dog, it was only by our own family dog that I know love them and feel safe around others. Owners know what there dog is like and therefore should warn others.

Chav dogs are like Chav kids.

Badly behaved and agressive due to lack of discipline.

It is all too much effort for those who expect everybody else in society to pick up their **** for them.

It's an absolute disgrace that this woman allowed this to happen and then had the audacity to blame the poor child, her grandmother and uncle.
How dare she claim that the dog did not bite lumps out of her? We saw the evidence in the photographs printed in the oxford mail.
She needs to take responsibilty instead of blaming anyone else.
It's just a matter of time before the dog attacks again but this is a much wider problem. Why has there been such a massive trend for bull terriers and similar breeds? This dog is of a breed very much like a staffy in appearance. They may have many good characteristics but the fact remains that they are incredibly powerful and most owners do not have them trained sufficiently and, as has been reported numerous times in the OM, many young and irresponsible owners encourage them to be aggressive.
It's time everybody had to get their dog chipped and registered by law. And for goodness sake muzzle them if there has been any concern for their behaviour in the past.
My very best wishes to Reah and her family. I hope she makes the best possible recovery, emotionally as well as physically. I'm so sorry you not only suffered these horrible injuries but also the injustice of having the owner try to blame the fact that you were frightened.

Scum woman. Shouldn't have a dog she can't control.

It needs to be given an owner who is "top dog" and will train it properly. Failing that it should be destroyed. I say this as a dog lover.

the dog needs to be rehabilitated regardless of who owns it ,I would be interested in doing so with this dog as i have worked with dogs like this before.

For a dog that is not good with kids, there is a worrying numbrof toys in the background of the picture.

the dog in the picture looks to me like it is protecting it's master, what he sees is a person taking a picture with a camra in the persons face making noise and the dog doesn't know what to think but to protect his master, all dogs are like that (protective) not the dogs fault, just needs training.

Barbara Woodhouse, Oxford says...

Sounds to me like the owner needs putting down, not the dog. Dogs trained, socialized and cared for properly wont lunge at strangers.

Take the dog off her and into a rescue centre so someone who knows about dogs can actually do some good with it. The woman is an idio, if it's bitten already it'll do it again if the problem isn't sorted out. Grrrrr.
