Oxford could be set to get a new waste "hit squad" in a bid to clean up city streets which are overflowing with rubbish from students and houses of multiple occupancy (HMOs).

Town Hall is considering introducing a £40,000 rapid response team under a series of new proposals to tackle problems associated with HMOs such as fly-tipping, side waste and refuse left in alleyways.

The hit squad will operate during university term-times in order to tackle the city's grotspots and improve the lives of residents living next to students and Oxford's 5,000 HMOs.

The squad will be combined with plans to provide 800 free blue wheelie bins for large families and HMOs who are judged to have problems with side waste in an effort to boost recycling.

Oxford City Council's Labour leaders also wants to abolish the £5 bin swap charge introduced by the Liberal Democrat administration in April to allow residents to get a big enough recycling bin or box to cope with their needs.

The matter will be discussed by the council's value and performance scrutiny committee tomorrow.

They should try cleaning up the public spaces before targetting anyone else. oxford is filthy!!

Sounds like a good idea, but it's outrageous that £40k should be charged to the tax payer. Clearly Brookes (and to a lesser extent Oxford Uni) should be paying for this.

I overheard some American tourists saying how filthy Oxford was, and I felt really ashamed, but had to agree.

It is a tip at the moment, and it's far from what it could be.

Why just target students? Bit of a cheap shot if you ask me. There are other people who have overflowing bins that they leave all over the place too.

And to run this just in term time is appalling. Oxford Uni and Brookes Uni also have entirely different term structures and times.

In Grand Canaries, they have their bins emptied every day for £45 p.a.
If they are in the EU, under EU law, why are we having to put up with fortnightly collections?

Ironic that students are the main culprits, and yet these are the ones that don't pay tax...

Why can't the university foot a proportion of the bill?

Tony Brett, they are targeting students, because it's mostly students living in the 5000 HMOs, and HMOs are the absolute worse culprits for littering the area.

Oxford City Council put £30000 aside to pay for large blue recycling bins for Oxfords residents, in the budget, but at the time it was not mentioned that only NON TAX PAYERS would be a priority for these, no us tax payers must continue to pay £20. While students houses, which everyone knows are always the most untidy in any street get them free and they still can't manage to seperate their rubbish.
The landlords should be fined each week there is a problem this would soon sort the problem out.

Further,
If students were watched leaving the cheap bar in Gypsy lane most nights/early mornings of the week it would soon become very obvious that a lot of the damage to car wing mirrors, and bins overturned etc is the responsibility of the little darlings on their way home after filling themselves with cheap beer.

I think you'll find Gran Canaria together with the other Canary Islands are outside the EU - even though they are Spanish islands. Nevertheless, they are very fortunate to get such a good service at a very reasonable price.

There are city streets that are overflowing with rubbish and there have been very very few students living in Oxford for at least 3 months.

*thinks to self* h'mm, maybe it's not the fault of students??
Nah, we must blame them aswearen't at fault at all

Just return weekly collections and stop messing about with other worthless ideas. Stop waisting the council tax payers money.

Most students in "halls of residence" (AND all-student houses) pay no council tax at all for the services they use but others among us subsidise for them!

Problems with poor UK waste collection and street cleaning have nothing to do with the EU, and all to do with your local council's ineptitude.

On our street, its not the students, that leave the waste out on the street at will, its the hairdressers and the restaurants from cowley road that dump in the side streets.

Sure the students have not got a clue about what goes in the blue recycling bin but i have seen with my own eyes who the worst offenders are.

Aslam I think your view is shared by 99.9% of people in Oxford.

Jobs need to be created thinking up new ways to save money (ironically the jobs often cost more than the savings if they ever see them.....).

It is criminal waste,no better than stealing the money.

It is very simple why Oxford has become so filthy in the last 5 years.
It is seriously overcrowded due to uncontrolled immigration.

Teenagers have no pride in their town and continue to litter (and the police do nothing).

The Council is criminal in it mismanagement of OUR MONEY.

Stop blaming the residents, blame OCC for introducing fortnightly collections against all the experts advice. We have a high proportion of shared housing, houses that were never designed to store rubbish for 2 weeks. Why does everyone have to accept this cut in services? This has no
thing to do with landfill or recycling with one of the highest council tax charges in the country OCC should be ashamed.

Just cut the Chief Executive's salary by a third (he gets more than enough, he won't miss it)and use it to fund bin collections. Keep cutting overpaid staff at City Hall until we have enough binmen to do *daily* collections.
Once they have sorted the first priority which is public health , then the city richbags can merit an increase.

This glorious city has become a dump over the last few years. Alas.
We pay more council tax and get less service.

Yes Oxford should make awareness about cleaning among people dont know about that.

Nothing will change until the H.M.O. Land Lords are sorted out. But that won't happen because of P.C. madness.
