A builder who is thought to have been crushed beneath iron girders on a Witney building site has died, hospital bosses revealed today.

The 28-year-old, who has not been named, was airlifted to hospital following the incident at the Marriotts Close site at 9am on Friday.

He suffered life-threatening injuries and staff at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford described his condition as critical.

This morning, Sarah Bergin, a spokesman for Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust, confirmed that the man had died.

She said: "The man involved in the accident in Witney died late in the afternoon yesterday."

Ms Bergin added that the trust would not be releasing the man's identity.

The victim was operating a cherry picker vehicle at the time of the incident and the Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation.

The accident site in Marriotts Close is part of a £50m redevelopment bringing new shops, houses and a multi-storey car park.

The development is expected to open next Autumn.

A small plaque to the dead would seem to be in order.

Desperately sad but a small plaque would be inappropriate. We don't do it for every fatal accident, or indeed ANY fatal accident, and we hear about them in our local paper almost weekly. Let the family remember him living and where they would choose, not at his final place of work recalling a terrible day for them all.

Sympathies to the family and friends of this gentleman. Such a terrible time for them.

Thoughts and prayers from us, a family of someone in the building trade too.

I would just like to say thanks to all who have placed the comments of sympathy regarding this story, I am a close member of family, and your kind words are extremely comforting. I would also like to give a very big thankyou to all the staff at the John Radcliffe hospital, they were very professional, and extremely caring and words cannot describe what a wonderful job they did in this most tragic time of our lives. Many thanks to all.

I would not call Mr Stern a Vulture he has a job to do like the rest of us.

Tragically the young lad died but of course this needs to be covered in the news there is a massive Health and Safety issue here.

My thoughts are with the young man's family. RIP

Quite unprofessional of the BBC to try and contact a family member through a comkments page. Don't know about you, but when I chase a story like this I go through the Police or another official chnnel.

My deepest regards go to the family. This must have come as a terrible shock. My heart goes out to youm all.

A very sad ending indeed. I had so hoped this young man would pull through. A devastating tragedy for all that knew him both personally and professionally.

Such a tragic accident. How disrespectful of the company to open the site again today, and how dangerous to open the site again without the investigation by the HSE being completed. Let's hope they have put new Health & Safety procedures in place to protect the workforce.

Disgusting and sickening but I have had local reporters do the same thing to me on some tragic news items. Nothing like trying to get the human touch and a quote of someone "close to the family" as they say.

It is sickmaking - but compassion doesnt appear to be either newsworthy or sell papers!

IMO it is not disresepctful to reopen work on the site - it is a sad statment of fact that life goes on and as it is do you not think that all the people working at the site will not be feeling this tragedy very deeply?

They WILL ... but they carry on the best they can, no doubt thinking it will if nothing else at least honour their dead colleague's memory.

RIP mate, I didnt know you but I wish your family all the hearfelt sympathies there are.
