A family is pleading for the return of a valuable pet dog which was stolen from a house in Grove.

Red - a seven-year-old Saluki worth thousands of pounds - was taken from a house in Peregrine Way almost two weeks ago.

The family's two other dogs, Diesel, an 18-month-old lurcher, and Lucy, a 14-year-old mongrel, were not taken in the raid on August 18 and nothing else was taken, leaving the family to believe the burglars knew about the dog's value.

Adam Woodley, 27, said young female Salukis could be worth up to £2,000.

He said: "They broke into a back window, forcing it open with a large screwdriver which they left on the premises.

"They then came into the house where there were three dogs, but they left two and kicked Lucy in the face, I think she probably fought back.

"I would say there was probably two of them because they would have had to pass her over the eight foot back fence which is how I think they got away.

"They must have known we had her, I think they might have seen her through the window. They were after her because nothing else was taken."

Mr Woodley, a mechanic, who lives with his wife Shelley, 25, an administrator, and their children Kian, six, and Bethany, three, said Red was not a registered pedigree, but was worth a lot of money. They bought her four years ago from a family in Leeds who could no longer look after her.

He said: "We have had her since she was three years old. Her breed is worth a fortune and in this area you can't get one for love nor money.

"She is really important to us, one step down from our children. She's a very loving dog that spends her nights in our bed and her days in our bed as well. She's a proper family pet.

"She's very elegant, generally quite happy, but not very obedient and she loved running. We just want her back."

Mr Woodley said Red was about 20 inches tall, red in colour on her back, with slender, creamy coloured feathery legs.

He said: "If she was a person, you would call her ginger in colour."

Thames Valley Police confirmed officers were investigating a burglary in which a Saluki dog was stolen on August 18 between 12pm and 3.10pm.

Certainly very fishy; a pedigree with potential for breeding with full KC registration papers from a registered breeder might cost £2,000, but an unregistered seven year old? I sincerely doubt it.

...and I've just read the bit where they lifted her over an eight foot fence with a lurcher and a mongrel snapping at their heels! That would have been a quick and quiet getaway!

Perhaps it was a failed burglary, and the saluki ran away when the perpetrators realised the house was full of dogs and pegged it through the door?

I think the point of this story is the owners want their well-loved pet back. I don't think how much she is worth is the point to them do you?? My dog isn't worth anything in financial terms (he's a cross breed) but he's priceless to me and the rest of my family!!

It was the owner that talked about money. It's probably the only reason he can think of. Not true though. Maybe kidnap / ransom?

**** you lot are so heartless...somethin
g unfortunate happens to somebody and the very first thing that comes to mind is that they did it themselves for the money. If you have children and or pets yoursleves then you'll realise that it would take an awfully sick person to pull a stunt like that and being parents no one in thier right mind could do that to thier children I hope they find their dog safe and sound and it once again fills thier lives with happiness!

Surely this is just sloppy journalism? It says young salukis can be worth that much, and that's about right for a pedigree sighthound puppy from a really good breeder but this dog is 7 years old - way past her best hunting or coursing days and way too old for a first litter even if not spayed so her value on the black market is pretty much beer money. The thieves have will have already found out she's worthless to them so the family's best course would be to contact doglost.co.uk and lurcher.org, both of which have extensive experience of reuniting dogs with owners, before they do her harm.

This is my dog that you are all discussing & for a start I would like to inform you that she wasn't insured against theft, so there goes your insurance scam ideas. Do you have any idea what it is like to come into your home to discover that one of your family pets have been stolen? Do you know what it's like trying to explain to your children why someone would break in & steal a treasured pet that they have grown up with. If anybody see's her then please let someone know as we are all desperate to have her back, this is nothing to do with money, we just want our dog back.

Shelley, the comments here reflect the real mentality of the mostly retarted people who comment here.

They are treating you with suspicion because they are just the type to commit insurance fraud themselves.

I would not take it personalally, but more of a reflection of the perverted minds of some of the community.

I really hope you get your dog back.

Most of the people that post on here could never possibly understand the love you can have for a pet.

As i always say.....how can some people love others when they cannot even like themselves.
