A rank for six taxis is at the centre of a row in Abingdon with drivers complaining that only five cars can fit on it.

Cabbies say they are fed up with being given £30 fines for parking inches over lines marking out the rank in East St Helen Street.

Jane Smith, who runs local firm PJ Taxis with husband Peter, was given a ticket last week.

She claimed her taxi's back wheels were "a couple of inches" over the end of the taxi rank, but she still got a fine.

The 47-year-old said: "For 15 years I have parked there and there's a sign that says it's for six taxis, but the sixth car keeps getting tickets.

"It's not funny when you spend £30 before you even start work.

"They're targeting us and this is literally becoming a nightmare as we're going to work and getting tickets. They're trying to stop us earning a living, which is hard enough as it is in Abingdon with the traffic."

The Vale of White Horse District Council insisted there was enough room for six taxis if they parked bumper-to-bumper.

Peter Warren, of PW Cars, was also given a ticket last month. He said: "I'm upset, because it stops me from earning a living.

"If you can't get on the taxi rank, then you can't get a fare and then you can't get a living.

"They have given us no alternative place to park. The taxi rank can't take six cars, as it's supposed to."

Matty Bird, 29, who works for Su's Taxis, said: "The taxi rank is slightly too short. They're targeting the taxis that park outside Fat Face and it has started recently.

"I was really annoyed, as I was only doing my day's work and I received a £30 fine - it was more than I made that day."

Council spokesman Gavin Walton confirmed the East St Helen Street rank was designed for six taxis.

He said: "If they park bumper-to-bumper - that's what they are supposed to do - they can fit in. We understand that the police requested that they do not overhang."

Sgt Charlie Pollard, of Abingdon police station, said: "If we catch a vehicle parked where it shouldn't be, the driver will be issued with a £30 fixed penalty notice."

Pass those fines onto The Vale.

They are banking on your inability to finance litigation.

I wouldn’t want to be parked in front of Council spokesman Gavin Walton who says the taxis should park bumper-to-bumper if he does that in a car park!! Never heard such rubbish, but then he does work for the Council – enough said.

As for Sgt Charlie ‘if we catch a vehicle parked where it shouldn't be, the driver will be issued with a £30 fixed penalty notice’ Pollard – well he sounds a typical jobsworth copper.

Wait a minute, if I as a private car owner park on double yellows I get a ticket, so why should taxi guys be any different. You can't move in Abingdon with the number of cabs there are, so a few less would be a good thing.

well it's obviously a five car taxi rank now then isnt it? stop moaning......stop parking there....or pay the fines......as already said, if Joe Public parks on double yellows they get fined so, so should the taxi drivers. makes up for their p**s poor parking and the ability to cut people up....oh...and lack of indicators too!!!

Im totally amazed at some of the reactions from members of the public who have made comments on this item.
By and large the taxi drivers of Abingdon do a very good job in serving the local community and really need the support of the public in this matter.
The Vale of the White take the drivers money but give them no support, whn asked about the length of the taxi rank the licensing dept tried to pass the blame onto the Highways Dept but it was they who signed the order for the length of the rank

I have been reading these comments made by several members of the public and find it all amusing. There are those that always moan about how taxi drivers drive but think nothing about it when they come out of the pub or club so drunk they have to take a taxi home. As for the ranks in Abingdon It’s always the cabbies that get grief the amount of times I have driven through the town day or night and seen private cars parked in the middle of the taxi rank out side Hodsons solicitors just so they can either go for a meal in one of the restaurants opposite or pick up a take away. Also every night the rank in Market place/East Saint Helens Street has private cars parked on them yet this is a 24 hour taxi rank so why is it none of these cars get tickets. So because taxis can’t get on the ranks that are supplied for them they get the ticket for parking so called “illegally” Is this fair? How about someone from the council issuing parking tickets 24/7 to private cars that are parked on taxi ranks. At least that way taxis will have more rank space. At least that way they would be making use of all the money that Taxi companies pay them every year. Talking about rank space who measured the rank out side Fat Face to fit 6 cars? Was it “Mini Cab” spaces? If the cabs parked so called bumper to bumper how would the middle cab get out with out the cars behind reversing to let it out. Maybe that’s the plan. So then the rear car would reverse over the line it could be issued a ticket.
